anyone knows if voip phones are as reliable as the old fashioned telephone line wired phones? i have a singapore voip (anyone in singapore can call this local number which is in NZ and we can dial any singapore local number) and it doesnt work on the odd day

I have use a voip phone in hong kong and apparently it works very well have no problems at home

I use a program called Hk2bn and its a hong kong local number.I sometimes too have a bit of problem using it to call overseas

I think its to do with Nz broadband

They are only as reliable as your internet connection. I only use my vfx phone here and it is just as reliable as the POTS but if your internet connection goes down or if you have a power cut then you are up the creek without a paddle. So if you go to naked dsl and a voip service it would be a good idea to keep a cellphone handy for backup in case of emergency

I have been seriously thinking about the slingshot plan - my only worry is the reliability. Every couple of months, slingshot will do something that screws up the broadband for a week, and I dont want my phone to go down with it for such long periods. Happens every 2-4 months.

I think they need to have some sort of uptime guarantee / policy in place to help with getting people off of landlines.

Also does anyone know if you can use the italk part with another ISP? And can you use standard voip software with it - I wouldnt mind having a local number attached to a vodafone pocket pc on a mobile broadband plan - would work well as a backup connection.

Yes you will be able to use the italk service with any device I believe and on any ISP, Data used with VOIP calls will come off your data cap on any ISP though with this service, as for service and reliabilty ....No Comment

Some "new era".

Just called Slingshot about their Naked DSL plan and discovered that I need a Telcom account to get one!!!

I'm currently on Woosh wireless (yes, I know) and the idea of signing up for a Telcom home phone account in order to get an NDSL account from a different provider seems completely absurd. I wonder if Xnet will do any better when their NDSL plan finally comes out.

Gee I hope so I have my landline billed through Ihug and hope that I dont have to change back to telecom just to get ndsl. I would like to be rid of telecom because of a bad experience I had with them a few years ago

Ihug users should be okay. It's only those of us without an existing landline that fall into this trap. I look forward to what Xnet has to offer, maverick, but this sounds to me like an issue with Telcom. Anyone know if you can sign up to Ihug without an existing Telcom landline? I know Orcon also doesn't allow this.

A basic UPS is cheap enough ($100) if you want to cater for power outages, and also helps filtering the mains to help prevent modem line drops (noise from the mains can couple through cheap power "bricks" and cause the line to drop, seen it a few times).

You can never have enough Volvos!

It is possible to have NDSL connected with out an existing phone connection, I work for an Aussie ISP and they do it there.
Telecom here does exactly the same as every other Telco, when a number is disconnected it's removed from service for up to 4 years. You can connect NDSL to you phone line with out an existing Phone connection so long as you know what the last connected number was on the line, becuase the number is never removed from your line until that number is put back into service.
But telecom here won't do it just yet because they will be losing enough money and International investors as it is, as it is they have listed them selves on the NYSE to try and get investors but finding it hard.
So yes it is possible, but weather telecom will allow it is another story.

Good to know that it is technically feasible to go straight to NDSL. With Telcom's motives for not allowing it and the fact that Slingshot cannot provide it now, I don't think there is a great chance of Xnet delivering on this but I'll wait to see.

it can be done if the ISP's are will to pay the price for it.
In Aussie The ISP's who do NDSL on ADSL2+ charge custoner $150 to connect the service, which is passed on from telstra to the ISP who the passes it to the customer.
This $150 is to connect customers who both have either no physcial line connected or do have a physcial line connected, so they both get charged the same.
It's apparently for the work that is involved with the exchange, I just don't think telecom will do it as they use GDC and Downer Engineering to do the work, as it is roumor has it Downer are trying to get out of their contract with telecom, because it states that they are soley committed to work for telecom and can't have contracts with any other company with in NZ, which downer thinks is unfair and too right it is.
But we'll see what happens and if telecom will allow NDSL to be connected with out a phiscal phone service, but the Copper line must be inplace at the premisses.
