Hi there, im looking at a move to waitangirua in porirua, wellington, does anyone know any good IPS other than telecom.

I'm currently a telstra cable customer but they dont go to porirua with there cable, so does anyone know any good reliable fast broadband companies that supply waitangirua, porirua

Telecom? I know you said apart from Telecom, but I did the same move a few years ago.

Came from TCL in Johnsonville, to TNZ as my chosen provider in Whitby/Waitangirua. Very reliable and very happy with my speeds. the MIL I signed up to snap, again, no problems with speed etc.

Also curious to know why not Telecom ?

We are in Aotea Porirua and find Telecom good, reliable and fast. We are also in an ADSL2+ area with VDSL capability. Speeds are good.

Looking at the Chorus availability tool (http://www.chorus.co.nz/sat) you seem to be in an ADSL2+ / VDSL area also.

Virtually all ISPs will be able to service your area with generally similar performance among most. If you are in a VDSL area why not try that hosting direct 100Gb for $100 VDSL plan being advertised on this site?

Telstraclear, Telecom, Snap, Vodafone, Orcon, Slingshot, Maxnet, Xnet, Actrix, Compass... and more probably.

Ask yourself these type of questions (below) then have a look at the plans on offer from the above ISP's:
- How many local and toll calls do you make on your landline to where?
- Do you have on account mobile with Telecom or Vodafone?
- Do you have sky?
- How much data do you use per month?

hi guys thanks for the reply's,

I'm no expert, but the reason for not telecom is, i ran a speed test ( speedtest.net) and the down was 10mbps and up was under 1mbps, that is significantly slower than what i get with telstra in wellington, also i was testing our speed playing online by running in a straight line, i was alot faster than he was.

My latency according to the servers i play on is 160-190, my nephews is 220-250, that's is a big difference when you are playing online

Now do i have no choice when i move out there and this is what i have to expect? or are there providers that can deliver 15mbps down and 2mbps up or can i get better for home use?

also is anyone using the Hosting Direct ISP and are on there 100GB VDSL2 plan, how are they finding it?

Nope, your upstream on adsl2 will be <1mbps, your sync rate will be the same for all the ISPs..Are the server you play on in the western seaboard in the US? Where they are probably affects ping times more..

The maximum you can get upstream with ADSL2+ is 1Mbps. if you want faster than this you will need VDSL2.

As for the downstream this is based on the distance from the exchange and the quality of your internal house wiring. Depending on your exact location you receive around 13 - 16Mbps. if the wiring in your home is poor this would be well under this, and if the wiring is impacting speeds it won't matter what ISP you go with.

Same question from a cable connection in Christchurch. Note the larger latency to the second hop, but the time to LA is about the same, though a very different path.

The wireless service above is 4/4, so twice the upload of your Wellington Telstra cable, but the download is only 30%.

At the location above I can get up to 36/36 (though the upstream ISP only has 8/8 plans currently, but I know the capacity is in the network).

If raw download grunt is your mission then the VDSL others have suggested would be the answer. If you're looking for raw upload speed then wireless by the country mile.

If you're wanting ping for gaming then the wireless and DSL will pace each other as long as the providers are managing their networks well (perhaps a quick review of the 'Telstra Free Weekend' thread if you don't follow what I'm on about).

Why is the upload speed important for you? I thought for gaming the key concern was ping? Are gaming starting to need more uploads? (spot the gaming 'know nothingness nerd').

A key issue to those west coast servers will be the performance the ISP can deliver at the time of day you want to use the service. www.truenet.co.nz - check out John's work on ISP performance. There does seem to be a clear gap between Telecom retail and other Chorus wholesale customers from what I understand, in the dsl tail/hand over, but how much impact that really has I don't know, though John's work might show up some clue.
