I upgraded ActiveSynch 3.8 to the version supplied on the CD by Telecom NZ (4.0.0 build 4538) because the Apache runs Windows Mobile 5 but... no go with the synching yet.

My Harrier synchs fine with AS 4, but the Apache doesn't show up as a device. That is, Windows XP discovers a Windows Mobile Device when you plug in the USB cable, but all that happens is that a new network connection is created, running at 10mbit/s. This stays in "acquiring network address" mode permanently, presumably as it waits for DHCP to assign an address (which doesn't doesn't make sense but...)

Have tried the troubleshooting tips at:

and I don't have a personal firewall installed on this box. No network optimiser or parental control thingies either :).

The Apache seems to be recognised OK as a Windows Mobile Device in Device Manager, but it doesn't show up in Explorer.

So... somewhere there's a conflict of some sort but neither ActiveSync nor WinXP provides any useful info about it.

Solved it, and can now synch the Telecom Apache and Harrier as well as the Vodafone Gasjar on the same PC.

The problem is that ActiveSynch does things over IP and thus sets up a network interface. This interface is auto-assigned an IP address in the 169.254.2.x range and for that to work, the DHCP Client service needs run on the Windows XP host computer. When I plugged in the devices with the USB cable, they were recognised by Windows XP but stuck forever in "Acquiring IP address" mode. You can see that if you look at the little icon in either Network Connections or on the Taskbar.

Once the service is running, Activesync 4 recognises the device. Next problem: Activesync would not synchronise Outlook items. Grr.

To fix this, unplug the device as soon as you see the dialog saying AS won't synch Outloook items, and run Detect and Repair under the Help menu in Outlook.

When D&R is finished, plug in the device and the Synchronisation Setup Wizard should start up and let you pick what to synch plus whether or not to do with against an Exchange Server or Outlook running locally.

Phew.

I installed AS 4.1 and am having the similar problem as you described. Checking from the MS help page also didn't help resolve the issue. I had to roll back to AS 4.0 Will appreciate any help.
