Hmm.. every Grandstream sold by iTalk is locked to them. They also used to delete the reset password of their forums if anybody tried to post it.

In regards to the VFX service which they refer to as their Voice over Broadband service which is actually Voice over Internet Protocol and more specifically in this case SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) and probably even more specifically the G729 codec which they predominately use.

The sip proxy needs to be released and they need to allow all software, devices etc... to be used on the service just like iTalk. This does not mean that they must support the hardware but they must give you the base settings so that you can configure it yourself. I think it is a waste of time because the end consumer should make the decision as to which VoIP provider they use. I am not only refering to New Zealand VoIP providers either.

VFX is just a product name nothing less and nothing more, same as VOBB just marketing tools , is there some issue with this ?

Actually here I will disagree with you even though I have stated this in other threads I will do so again and explain why.

SIP is actually made up of 45 RFC's we do not wish to be like other services we wish to be like VFX, and the way we do this is to ensure that our Network has full interoperability across all our network elements, A Teleco Network is not made up of a VOIP device and a proxy there are quite a few more layers that that. If we allow complete open access to all devices just because it SIP this could & would cause numerous issues. Example I give you a User Name auth ID and password and say all yours, what will your device want in the way of messages for

Voice Mail - Notify or subscribe ?
For Call Hold or transfer - what messages will you as the user use SIP Notify, SIP Refer, SIP 302 Moved or perhaps a re invite,
3 way calling, local call hold, re invite or Notify, or perhaps options.

please tell us what happens if a call does not hang up correctly when you did a transfer to a mobile and the bye message was not interpreted correctly as you used a 302 to transfer the call, who will take ownership of that call to a mobile for 3 hours will you as the end user take all responsibilities for calls to and from your device ?

The point I am trying to make is that while SIP is very flexible it brings with it numerous configuration options and not all can be supported so they custom configs are required to allow services to work across multiple network elements.

We take a lot of time to test our network for interop to make sure services work correctly, we will be working to support different devices including Astrix but we will not be compromising network quality in any way shape or form, for users that like to run their own systems and are not happy with this there are other options you have mentioned one here, but I see by the state of their forums they seem to have a awful lot of issues using this open access policy, once again I say freedom of Choice and service, ask yourself though what you would rather have a service that works or one that may work ?

So I wonder why not simply use iTalk from now, seeing that you can point so many good things there, even though we know the grass is not always greener on the other side...

I for one can understand why vfx devices are locked down and are remotely provisioned, because it allows them to provide a service that works for the average person straight out of the box. I feel extreamely comfortable recommending VFX to friends and family where as italk, from my personal experience, is not a useable service; 1. because their voip network doesn't always work, 2. their technical support staff, in my experience, are incompetent, 3. Italk security leaves a lot to be desired(I have had fraudulent calls on my account), 4. Customer service is obviously not a slingshot priority(some of their CSRs are just plain rude).

Though as maverick points out it is all about freedom of choice. But I seriously doubt any average person who just wants a voip that actually works would pick italk over vfx.
