Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend who has bought a laptop and wants to run it wirelessly with their Telstra cable. They bought a belkin wireless router and we connected it between their SB5101 cable modem and their old networked desktop.

Auto setup program needed all the static IP address,dns etc from Telstra which we rang up and got eventually...

Managed to set up the laptop to connect wirelessly to the router but we couldnt get any internet access from either the laptop(vista) or desktop(2000pro).

In the process of mucking around I gave up cause i was pissy, disconnected the router and got the cable modem working again with the telstra supplied details in the TCP/IP setting of the network card. (right way to do it?)

Feeling some what encouraged I had a fiddle around with the belkin router again and inadvertantly (on purpose) changed the settings for it being an access point only. It said I could access its control screen though 192.168.2.254 instead of the 192.168.2.1 but I couldnt for some reason. So I am stuck at the moment...

Any suggestions what I should do next? I feel I need to be able to recover the belkin router back to its default settings then concentrate on the network/internet access issue.

Quite a few Belkin routers have a reset button on them to reset them back to the factory default, have you tried this? I believe you need to hold it down for 10 secs or so.

Good call! downloaded the manual (cause its still at their place) and there is a reset button. I'll do that and then can start from scratch.

Ok, so the router reset no problem. Now I have done a bit of research and confirmed in my mind that the cable modem is transparent, so the IP settings etc are done at either the computer (if going straight in to the modem) or at the router (when networking).

I am confident that all the details Telstra supplied were input in to the router properly so how can I tell (apart from seeing if there is actually internet access) if the router and modem are speaking to each other.

Could it be firewall settings in either the router, or on the desktop(2000pro) or laptop(vista) that are stopping any action taking place?

I also might try a different ethernet cable to see if there is a problem with the supplied one?

Right, managed to get everything going. I had to clone the MAC address from the computer to the router and from then on I had internet on the wired and wireless connections... but only for about 6 hours until it all stopped with no fiddling going on.

Disconnected the router back out of the equation and sure enough the modem is working fine by itself in to the computer.

What could be going on here? Could there be an intermittant problem with either the modem or router? I dont think there is a problem with any of the cables.

Did I see a thread on the TelstraClear forum about intermittant problems with modems hanging with routers?

hey

you shouldnt have to clone a MAC address, unless that security feature is enabled on your router.

so to set this up, if you havent already.....

set your wireless router back to default' using a match or something

plug into your wireless router with ethernet cable

bring up you router internal config, goto WAN or wherever you IP, subnet gateway and DNS are and add in the info supplied by ISP

set you router to DHCP enabled

unplug pc from router and set wireless network on PC to "obtain ip automatically"

plug cable into cable modem, turn off cable modem at the power for 5 minutes. turn on

thats it
only your telstra cable modem uses MAC to identify to telstra.

What model Belkin is this router? could you please supply the model or even the manual, and I will have a compare to my dlink wifi router (which is connected to the cable modem). p/s: I'm in chch too.

Internet is my backyard...
