Download at peak time (about 7.15pm). It's been happening the last few nights. Consider the "peak" shaping before changing :P.

Now thats interesting.
Can you tell the exact time the speed drops and what protocol / service is being used to transfer the data?
Also where is it coming from?

The guys at slingshot have always advocated that they dont shape data in any way, and let the network deal with itself but that drop in speed so rapidly makes me a little concerned and I would also like to test it.

That image wont load for me, but I have being finding it pretty crap.

I got another router to get adsl 2+ after finding one that a friend has that stood up to the hammering that most are prone to crashing under. I was blaming the router for the craptastic performance, but it seems not.

If I go to the routers interface and click disconnect, then reconnect, I get a burst of about 2 mins of 380k/sec, till it drops to junk speeds, totally repeatable.

However this is not a workable solution, It did let me download a 350 meg file at an average of 100ish rather then the 12 it dropped to with slingshot screwing with the connection.

Here's my good 'ol fallback graph for whenever they feed me **** about not shaping.

It may be old, but it definitely shows against "we don't shape".

First one: ~2Mbps. Second and third ones: ~0.7Mbps.

That's wrong, Slingshot has been shaping there data for ages. Torrent's get shaped 1st.

How does "no time index" equate to useless?

The first image is from months ago, so isn't really relevant anyway.

The second was taken around 11PM, and shows the massive drop that occured over a minute between three 'speedtest's I did.
It isn't to show a definite shaping period, just to show the strange drop (that remaing constant for at least 5 minutes) that occured.

It's hard to see what your doing. I know there is an issue too and it's something your should call the helpdesk abut and get a ticket/issue number about it.

Peak times are always slow, does this change always happen at the same times?

This issues seems like the standard issue of large variate of speeds at different times, with nz leading the world in this trend of peaks and lows.

I don't know when these kind of drops (which seem to be triggered by some reasonable transfer rate) start being activated, but I know they stop around 1:30AM.

Total incoming data is under 130kBytes/sec and my gmail imap wont connect, and I cant get onto an international news server.

Up until about 2 weeks ago i got 780KB/s 24/7 - was the good life, now ...

I too am a victim of 'drop offs' after getting about 750KB/s from international news server for about 2 mins it then drops to about 1KB/s and stays there until i close all internet traffic for about 5 mins and open it again, then omg 750KB/s but aww only for it to drop off again 2 mins later. And its not just news server traffic, for me its all including web.

Phoned and complained x2, apparently i have a broken router - yeah it broke the same time all these other people are having problems. How convienent.

Also if your going to offer unlimited off-peak dont shape it for gods sake.

Thinking about switching to slingshot - think again

Yes, thats exactly what I get here, but you can simulate the several mins of no traffic by taking the PPP down and up again. Sadly that makes the nat table on the router clear so any open connections die.

I found that only a few seconds (around 20) of no constant connections will 'reset' the speed cap.

Here's a NetMeter graph of the speeds slowing down:

And another one a few minutes later:

Anyone else notice the exact same pattern?

(As a FYI: the speed leveled out at <64kbps - that IS a small b. COMPLETELY unacceptable.)

yeah the later in the day the quicker between time of start and slowing. its just a royal pain in the arse. Spent another 30 mins on the phone with them

trying to figure out 'whats wrong at my end' i said is there ever going to be a point where you can tell me its not at my end! got a round about no real answer.

did all of this start about a week or two ago for everyone else?

Yep pretty much :(
My speed/latency seems fine most of the time, (altho I don't download much in the day. really only download at 1AM-7AM) I only really download small things like firefox or little updates in the day, but when it hits 1AM I download my podcasts and all the heavy stuff which used to go at full speed (612KB/s) but now it peaks at that for about 2-5 mins then slows right down to about 50-70KB/s

I just hope slingshot gets this fixed and back to how it was a few weeks ago...

Same for us here. What really ticks me off is they let us all call the help line and play dumb, when this has become common knowledge amongst users.
So here we are 6 weeks later and no change. Might be time to move to another provider.
