Has anyone yet commented on the fact that the HD demo freeview channel is showing 5 minute segments of TV One and TV Two shows in HD? Then it uses the TV One and TV 2 logos, flashes back to the colour screen and starts another one.
I saw "Pushing up daises", "Cold Case" and that FBI series about serial killers, is it called "Special Investigations"?

Does this mean we are going to start seeing true HD out of TVNZ?

Hopefully it does mean they are going True HD

Aren't they supposed to be broadcasting the Olympics in HD? Perhaps they are just 'clearing their throat' in preparation.

I assume they are going to use the currently unused Sport TVNZ HD channel for the olympics. I found this from Rick Ellis;

Rick Ellis today at the launch of TVNZ 6 about the Olympics and TVNZ Sports Extra:

"TVNZ Sports Extra will be used for 24/7 coverage of the Olympics! So if there's two events going on at the same time where Kiwis are competing, we'll be able to choose which one we want to see. We'll also get heaps more coverage with two channels covering the games".

When is this happening?
We are targeting July 2008, in advance of the Beijing Olympics in August 2008.

What is special about HDTV?
It gives you the highest quality picture available, it comes with surround sound, and broadcasters around the world are now planning to introduce it, or have already done so. It gives you the most 'real' visual experience possible.

How much HD content will there be?
Most international content is already available in HD. In peak time, TV ONE will carry about 50% HD and TV2 will carry about 80%. We expect the amount of local content in HD to grow progressively over the next few years as TVNZ and the local production industry gear up for it.

Will there be a sharp distinction between HD and SD content?
Within the HD channels, material that is not produced in HD (ie SD material) will be upconverted to minimise the difference in quality. There will be a difference in quality between the HD channels (TV ONE and TV2) and the SD (standard definition) channels (TVNZ6, TVNZ7 and Sport Extra).

Will there be Surround Sound?
Yes. Wherever it's available, we will broadcast it.

Most interesting is the 50% on TV One and 80% on TV2 with surround sound "where available"

sort of. TVNZ Sport Extra will be used for 24/7 Olympic coverage, though in SD (as I understand). TV One will be covering the Olympics in HD.

Yeah, I wondered what was up last night when all the content changed from the usual loops to actual TV clips.

Anything on the TVNZ website about broadcasting in HD or any press releases?

The Sport Extra channel is not HD, it is only SD. Olympics coverage on TV1 will be in HD but will only be SD on Sport Extra.

I had a look 30 minutes ago and compared to the normal test loop, the TVNZ trailers were very hghly compressed with noticeable blockiness and colour smudging.

TVNZ announced its HD plans late last year. TV One will be going 720p late July/early August in time for the Olympics. The TVNZ release is here. Only TV One and 2 are going HD, 6, 7 and Sport Extra are going to be SD.

At the end of Sportscafe Tonight, they were showing a TVNZ HD trailer, first time I've seen it (admittedly I don't watch TVNZ that much)

Any news on whether we'll see any true HD content before Beijing?

Some programs on TV One will be HD. The Sports channel will not be.

HD programming from overseas is easy to obtain. But it will take time for local content to go HD. Just look at this article about the CBS Evening News finally going HD

Having visited the TVNZ studios, if they made the investment, they could multipurpose that area for all their current affairs shows like the 7'oclock show, Agenda, Breakfast, etc. Plus with many overseas feeds now being in HD, it wouldn't look so jarring when they switched from the SD studio feed to an HD news item.

Still I would agree, would not make me want to watch them any more!
