I am sitting in Parnell, Auckland and I have a SIM from Optus Australia.
I just looked on my phone and I am roaming on the NZ COMMS network. I searched the networks manually and it brings up VFNZ and NZ COMMS in my N95.

Since when they went live? I can make phone calls, I just called my NZ mobile number and it works...
This is a big thing everybody... we have a new active player in the NZ mobile space.. :)

ps. I couldnt find a Forum dedicated to NZ COMMS hence I did as an "off topic"

For those, who doesnt know the details: NZ COMMS formerly known as Econet is building a new GSM network in NZ.
I thought they are still in a trial phase, but it seems they must have some roaming agreement with Optus already.

I am hooked on their 2G network at the moment and can make phone calls...

I encourage everybody who has a SIM from abroad and roaming here in NZ at the moment to manually search for the network in your mobile and try to choose them if you can access.

We tried with a VFNZ SIM and obviously "access denied". But at least people with local SIM can search if they can see their network and post here the result.

I can definitely see (and use) their network in Parnell, Auckland.

Still no sign of their network here in Wgtn. NZ05 (Telecom NZ) is alive in Lower Hutt/Petone and at couple of sites in the Wgtn CBD.

It's good that NZ has another provider. I think I just resolved to "believe it when I saw it" as it took such a long time to get going. I wonder when the rest of the country will be built out/go live.

Ooh, Time to crack out the E50 and my trusty O2 and optus sims! I'm up there in a week so i'll have a play. I'd connected some time before a couple of months ago with my "SuperSIM" but it was short lived.

I'm surprised that Telecom is live! wow, I'll have to go for a drive to paknsave!

Interesting, according to GSM World the network* was live in January this year, and only just a few days ago, they were reporting it as an 1800Mhz network, but GSM World has been updated to reflect a 900Mhz offering also.

I can only see Vodafone NZ on my AAPT phone here (Bucklands Beach, Auckland).

*Northelia Holdings Limited is according to the Companies Office owned by Econet / NZ Communications.

If I am right they bought 1800 and 900 frequencies too.
Some of my collegaues saw their network already in January, but this is the first time they saw somebody could connect to it.

I am still not sure how can a company have roaming agreement with another Operator form abroad if they have not gone officially live yet. I haven't seen anything like this before. At least not in my projects and I was supporting some rollouts over the last few years worldwide.

How should I know what they are charging per minute while I am roaming??

And this is what I've found on that webpage:
Northelia Holdings Limited has not declared any active roaming agreements with other network operators to the GSM Asso.

True, this is one advantage of zone based roaming through, cost certainty. It would be interesting to hear what NZC are charging via Optus for roaming.
