Out of curiosity I was looking at signing up for SNAP. The issue for me is my house hasn't had Telecom service for 8 years so their online page was not able to determine if the house had xDSL services. But based on Chorus's map I can get VDSL2+.

The problem is while there is Telecom wiring to the demarc, presumably to the pole on the street, there is no connection from the demarc to the internal wiring, that being connected to Telstraclear's wires.

I suspect for me to get SNAP I need at least one of the Telecom pairs to go to my spare pair in the house (which used to be connected to a second TCL line but that has been disconnected).

That would come under the installation option Other for which I would have to pay $402. That is something to really dissuade a customer from coming over.

Its the standard Chorus fees. Just do it yourself!

That's the Chorus pricing for a new POTS off install. With POTS on it's around $100 cheaper.

You'll need to run new cable for VDSL2 to a dedicated jackpoint anyway which that cost will cover.

EDIT: That's a normal fee ISPs pass on from Chorus.

Where in NZ are you? We do VDSL installs (including wiring) in the $150-$200 range.

Khandallah, Wellington. Based on those costs I think I am staying with TCL for the moment.

If as Steve says I need new wiring for VDSL2 then that's going to be expensive since the current wiring is trenched from the street to my rear section down some 20 meters or so.

I thought VDSL used the standard copper lines?

I signed up to Snap last week and didn't pay the $402 because as far as I knew, the existing copper would work and I didn't need any filtering (no homeline/alarm etc). If I'm totally wrong about this please let me know ASAP because I have to have a bit of a panic.

In the OP's situation:

So some wiring for the OP will be required. If you've got existing copper and it's all wired up to a jack in the house, then you should be OK assuming the wiring condition is OK and you've only got one jackpoint.

The other day, I too tried to change my home ISP from Telstraclear to SNAP as Telstraclear aren?t competitive when it comes to Data Cap allowance. However the house has never been connected to Telecom.

Turns out I?m stuck with Telstraclear unless I get trenching done from my house to the power pole according to Chorus.

Chorus will not install a new cable from the Power pole to the house via the Air (over hanging wire) nor will they use the current conduit (which I think has enough space for an extra cable) as they aren?t allowed to interfere with Telstraclear. Instead they said I have to get a contractor to dig a trench. Seems a bit over kill to me.. I live in Brooklyn (Ohiro road)
