There are a lot of good midrange phones around now cheap, I should have said s8 as well thats below $600. I really want Amoled hence no RN7. But Xiaomi are releasing the mi a3 supposedly in Amoled SOC 710.

What to do have no private phones now I sold my collection and broke my Lumia while I was waiting for the mi a3 but seems it might take forever.

We have the v30+ and wouldn't buy another. We have had some annoying issues with things like Android Auto and notifications etc. I was a massive fan of the v20 with it's second screen (I consider it in the top 3 phones out of the 70+ I've owned).

For someone who wants a simple experience with Android, likely compatible with everything, widely supported with easily available spare parts I'd go Samsung, and I'll get a Samsung for my wife who has the V30+, next round.

For me, I find it hard to go past the form factor and pen of the Note series, however I've owned the flagships of all major brands and some that no longer exist, I am willing to a point to look past some issues for an awesome experience, but ultimately for me, I keep ending up with Samsung.

totally agree Networkn, I LOVE the original notes until 5, then they went with curved edges. Need to get back to like the p20x. but it doesnt have the work functionality.

i just cant afford one is the problem. $1k minimum

Ive decided to skip flagships for now. I really wanted an HDR OLED though as I cant afford a new TV right now and I watch netflix a lot.

Would I be better to buy the A50 at $430 or go for a used S8? Although the S8 non note wouldnt display HDR though i read in netflix?

Cheers for the reply. I thought by it saying a 2 degrees phone it meant its imei is locked etc.

I do need a personal phone but was going to get an S8 refurb, but this saves $200 and 2 OS versions more, perhaps it might be 3 A30s.

Nah, that's just where that particular SKU is sourced from and the software variant it will be running - 2d doesn't lock phones anymore. Have to be super clear in advertising when a device is network locked.

The A30 is a nice piece of kit, extremely competitive midranger, businesses will be eating them up for fleets.

Thanks mate that is reassuring, yes thats what 2 of them are for, but the last of my personal phones is dead (outside a coupel of ZTE button phones).

Its processor and GPU is not quite as good as the equivalent qualcomm, but you get samoled, nfc and a widescreen cam. I figure for the money its not bad. I had J4s and they were fine so I figure these cant be any worse.

I would NOT watch HDR video on a phone over a 4K non HDR TV or even a 1080p TV! Unless the TV is really really really really bad ... I'd probably buy a dirt cheap good TV.

The J-series was never good value on spec, although some of the cameras were surprisingly good.

The new A-series is Samsung taking on the likes of Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo directly and the results are very good. Compelling spec, sharp prices, lots to like.

Personally the A30 is my pick as the optical in-display fingerprint scanners on the A50 and A70 are from a generation somewhere prior to the latest iteration of the tech. The P30 Pro and OnePlus 7 Pro are the first devices with in-display scanners that I consider usable.

If you need a cheap phone now that doesn't suck the Redmi 7 is worth a squiz, it's overshadowed by the Redmi Note 7 but really quite nice. Moto G7 series due end of June too. Yet here's Samsung offering very stiff competition on both spec and price which is fantastic.

I have exclusively owned 40" 1080p Sony Bravias for the last ~10 years. They can be had off of TradeMe for around $400 and are excellent for the needs I've had in that time.

Meanwhile give me the latest, best, fastest phone available because that's what I actually get the use out of it and am prepared to put the money down on because the benefits are there. While I don't watch video on my phones terribly often, when I do, the ones that have been HDR certified by Netflix are very very nice to watch on (note that they must be whitelisted to get Netflix HDR, anyone wanting this feature should check the whitelist).

When I first moved to Auckland ~6 years ago I spent 6 months with a phone and an iPad as my only devices before my PC was shipped up and I acquired a replacement 40" Bravia. It was largely fine, but a phone by itself wouldn't have the job.

Incidentally Samsung's new AMOLED A-series were just HDR certified by Netflix today, so that's a compelling selling point.

I dont notice 4k over 1440p, much like I dont notice frame rates above 30-40 yet others claim they see 120....

I have been in Turmoil Nik for the reason the v30 which you guys sell is 1440p oled and HDR compliant. I DO watch a lot of video on a phone. But once OLED notebooks come down in price I will likely watch a lot on there.

My Sony Bravia 1080p has taken on a whole better look since plugged my Xbox One S into it, the standard software for some reason on Netflix etc just looks washed out vs vibrant on my Xbox. Its not new I think the kdr55

Back to the phone, I would be super happy with just Amoled. But surely the A30 isnt HDR10 compliant?

I didnt manage to get 2 at my local today but supposedly stock elsewhere.

Im still curious, why do they advertise as "2 degrees" Phones, each provider has an A30, ie the one for Spark is still full priced.

So if the 2 degrees one is unlocked, why bother calling it a 2Degrees phone?

Is it just marketing spin?

I ended up getting 3 A30s. Nearly went with the redmi note 7 as its $320 at the moment. But I wanted a cheap amoled for myself. I could have got a V30s Thinq 6GB model but was another $200. Oh well. Next time. I mostly just want something for basic call function and watching netflix and figured amoled would be best.
