Watching the Old man on disney plus through my apple tv. During the flashback scenes there are a lot of scenes where the characters talk in a foreign language but no subtitles show what they are saying  I tried turning on English CC subtitles and still nothing. The subtitles just says "foreign language". We have to resort to changing to Audio description where a narrator explains what is being said.

Anyone else have this issue and know how to solve? Bit infuriating

Very common. Very annoying.

OMG, I was getting SO frustrated with this on E4 tonight… we did the same with turning on the narration but that really interrupted the flow.

I got as far as opening up a chat window on Disney’s website to complain but decided to do it when on a computer tomorrow.

I get it sometimes it may be an editorial decision to not translate a few sentences, but this episode had many minutes where not a word of English was spoken, rendering the scenes pointless - so surely this is a Disney screwup?

It must be an error as there are at least French and Danish subtitles for those scenes. Thankfully the audio description helped as my French is nowhere good enough.. I’m watching via the Samsung tv app so it must be a common problem.

This is fairly common, especially where it's produced by a third party and they've bought the rights to distribute. No idea why subtitles aren't part of those rights.

Have just finished chatting with Disney Plus, and apparently others have complained (notably with E4) and it's being looked into:

And also upon checking, our investigation team is already looking into what's causing this to see how we can have a fix in place.

I've asked to be notified once it's sorted.

Glad it was not just me.

I think Ep2 had some scenes and i thought it was deliberate. Might have to go back to work out what was being said.

There were a few episodes of something on Netflix that was the same. All of the Spanish only scenes were difficult to comprehend, and turning in subtitles only resulted in "foreign language" as the subtitles.

A bit off-topic, but according to the person who forwarded the info to me, NZ is the only "developed" nation who has no legal requirement for compulsory captioning of broadcast content. There is a Parliamentary petition currently underway to request that legislation be passed to make this compulsory. Doesn't help with overseas content of course, but if you care about this for NZ (and I do as my hearing continues to deteriorate), I'd encourage you to sign:

https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/petitions/document/PET_122694/petition-of-hope-cotton-create-legal-captioning-standards

Edited to clarify.

Currently watching SWAT, where none of the foreign language is subtitled, including one episode set in Mexico.

I've just checked E4 again and it looks like subtitles have been sorted; they're not automatically displayed during those scenes where all dialogue is not in English (Dari? Pashto?), but do show when English CC is selected. Think I'll re-watch these scenes so I actually understand what was going on; and here's hoping they're present on future episodes (which day do they get released?)

I was going to post about this this morning.

I thought it was a setting on my Apple TV. I could get the subtitles by going and selecting English CC, but then I'd also get them for all the English spoken bits (and the 'Moody Music plays' 'Keyboard clacking'). I just toggled them on and off for the flashback bits, but it was annoying.

There's a movie on Disney+ called The Valet with the same problem. The move is about 50/50 English and Spanish, but when we watched it a few weeks ago the only subs available were all or nothing - no subs for just the Spanish dialogue. It was quite annoying.

Have been watching this show on Disney and the subtitles have displayed in all the scenes set in Afghanistan. So the issue must have been fixed.
