I can track / time my outdoor exercise sessions using my android phone with google fit app which uses GPS rather than background tracking with just uses gyro / float bubble (forget the name of that) thing.

But on my Dads iphone this feature doesn't exist. I checked permissions etc through the settings, but couldn't work this out.

How do you do this on an Iphone? Mainly just to track bike rides. Don't want to buy an apple watch.

Strava can track running and cycling activities without the need for a watch, although you obviously wouldn't get any heart rate data.

Does strava work well on the free tier? If installing 3rd party apps is the only way around this, what other tracking apps could people recommend? Thanks

I pay $95 a year for the premium version and I'm not thrilled with the quality of training data, but I'm a runner and swimmer and I gather that the experience is better for cyclists.

From what I recall the free version is pretty functional so for your purposes I think it would be fine. One benefit of Strava is that it's widely used by athletes, so you'll appreciate being on the platform if you want to connect with other people you know, or if you become more serious with your fitness in the future.

My knowledge of iphone fitness app is limited as I use android. But google fit app can see health data. Just can't work out how to GPS track / time work out.

i.e. google fit app can in android but can't (track activity) on iphone.

I thought the Apple Fitness app was dependant on having a wearable device for recording run/cycle/swim activities.

Sportstracker is very good. I've used it for years, cycling mainly but used it fore tracking things like road trips while on overseas trips.

While it has a paid premium version I only use the free version which does everything I need.
