I stumbled across a new discount that slingshot offer on their homeline charges.

Im not sure on the details, their CSR said that its to do with 'Telecom dropping their charges for the first time in years' (which is obviously a simplification of something more complicated going on). Im not sure where it applies, but from what I can tell by inputting a few addresses into the address checker on their website, it seems to apply in the main centres (Akl, wgtn, chch) but not in Kapiti (which normally has cheaper line rentals from Telecom to compete with the TCL HFC network despite not being a city). It doesnt appear to be related to LLU, altho i suspect it might not apply if you are on LLU gear.

To lock in the $9 saving - $42 rather than $51 per month for homeline - you need to sign a 12 month contract on your homeline.

Im only going on what i have discovered, nothing officially announced, but if you're a slingshot customer you might as well enter your address in their website address checker and give them a call. $9 is a lot to some people :)

Telecom homeline line rentals have been cheaper in Wellington, Christhurch and Auckland than the rest of NZ for ~10 years now. Somebody in Wellington on Telecom for example pays $41.60 per month vs $50.23 that somebody in Palmerston North would pay.

The cheaper prices offered by telecom are nothing new, however, slingshot passing this on to their customers is new (i believe, as it was not offered to me when I joined several months ago)

The ComCom determined what exchanges were urban and which were rural and there is a ~$20 cost difference in the regulated wholesale price for a DSL service (eg: EUBA, BUBA etc) between urban and rural.

Telecom Retail pricing is actually smoothing out the difference by only giving $10 less for people in the main cities.

Sounds like Slingshot are doing the same now, it makes total sense much easier to market main cities being $10 less rather than a whole ton of particular exchange that are rural being $20 more and a whole ton of particular exchanges that are urban being $20 less.

Naked pricing is completely different to homeline pricing.

When the government sold off telecom in 1987, they specified three things
- Homelines are to be the same price throughout the country
- Free local calling
- Price of a homeline may only rise by the yearly cost of living rate.

That was all fine and dandy until telstra clear started rolling out their cable network in auckland, wellington and christchurch in the late 90's, so Telecom got permission to lower the price in these areas so that they could remain competitive.

Nothing to do with the urban/rural designation of the exchanges. Slingshot are just reselling wholesale POTS from telecom and therefore its cheaper to slingshot in the auck,wel and chch areas.

It is not llu related, nor reliant on urban/rural settings.

This is correct.

Our IT guys have worked very hard to allow our system to allow us to pass on better homeline prices to people in certain areas.

This is unrelated to where we have our own equipment in exchanges (UCLL)

As far as I am aware there is no immediate implementation planned to automatically adjust current customers to the newer prices, however it is entirely possible that at some point this will be done.
