NZ 24 Mobile network?

this morning when I did a mobile network search in Auckland to conect my United mobile sim I found both Vodafone and "NZ 24" network I could only connect to Vodafone. Any knowledge about NZ24?

that would be an ecumenical matter

Will either be NZ Communications (a.ka. Econet, a.k.a I doubt it), or one of Telecoms 100 GSM/WCDMA cellsites that are already up.

Either way, its not useful for anything at present.

Looks like it is the Mobile Network Code for NZ Comms (formerly Econet)...

I can well understand your scepticism Tony, but Kordia have recently installed 10 Cell Sites around Auckland for NZ Comms according to their latest Spectrum newsletter (the same one that let the cat out of the bag concerning their work in Myanmar).

So, who knows, maybe we will be able to connect to the NZ Comms network by this time next decade

I just think its ridiculous that they can go on about it for years, and are still so far away.

Slow-moving Telecom announces a new network last year, and will build+launch this year. If Telecom can do it, why can't NZC ?

They will miss the boat, and simply be a third GSM operator, and will need a marketing powerhouse if they are going to succeed - which, given the lower and lower cost of services lately is going to get harder and harder.

Maybe true flat-rate GPRS, and stupid call pricing would work, but then, wheres the ROI if you do that?

I am no business analyst, which I guess is the reason I cannot see them making a single dollar of return.

They will need to launch a very good nationwide service (well, metro+roaming agreement) with great marketing and sales capacity BEFORE Telecom do, or it will just never work out.

Im my own worthless opinion of course :-P

All other things equal, Telecom have the advantage of already having sites. NZC have to go out and get sites and then get consent for them. That's probably the hardest thing about building a new network. Not an enviable position.

Fair call, though they have had a very long time to be getting all this sorted.

Does anyone remember when Econet first made waves about being 'imminently about to enter the industry'. I don't, but it was some time ago.

Would be great to have seperate network offerings from three companies, plus Telstra adding their own value on Telecoms network(s), but in reality, I don't envy NZC entering the market soon(/later). It will be a tough road for them.

The impression I get is it's full steam ahead for them now that they have $$$ so this would make sense.

I am one of the senior design engineers, and I can confirm that NZ24 is indeed the NZ Communications network. You won't be able to do much on it just yet, but watch this space! :)

Interesting press release here (for those that haven't seen it).

They go live sometime this year, using the Vodafone network for roaming.

Wow, competition in mobile is going to be crazy this year if NZC lives up to the date, and if telecom launches GSM before the end of the year.
Im about to buy a telecom phone, but now im wondering if i should wait...

I'd missed this thread.

The mobile identifier is 530-24 which belongs to NzComms hence the NZ-24 denomination at present.

Buy a cheap telecom phone and await the 3 network choice soon on GSM!
Flexi Mytime offers "all network" rates and $10TXT is 500 messages to any NZ Network.

I've got a hold of an old nokia 6585 which is pretty good, better than the entry level ones.
I'm hoping theres going to be some good competition going on in plans, especially when it will be so easy to switch providers
Will they be able to lock handsets to networks? I hope not.
