If you have your Sky TV channels memorised, you're going to have to start again.

Sky Television announced today it will be changing its current channel numbering on May 1 in a move to group its channels by genre.

It said the numbering will "allow for growth", making space for new channel launches and special events.

"A change like this is a significant one and the decision to make these changes was not taken lightly," said Sky chief executive John Fellet.

"We appreciate just how familiar Sky customers tend to be with our channel numbering. However, the change is born out of a fantastic growth story, we've introduced more than 10 new channels since the last change to channel numbering in 2007 and we have firm plans to continue introducing compelling new channels."

SKY will be advising customers of the changes soon, which it plans to do through TV, email, websites and "phone messages".

Some of the key changes will include:

- General Entertainment and Lifestyle channels will extend to button 29

- Movies start at channel 30 and will be expanded to 20 channels

- Sport starts at channel 50 and will be expanded to 20 channels

- Allowance for 'Pop Up' channels within Sport and Movies

- Factual and News will start at channel 70

- Family and Music will start at channel 100

- SKY Box Office Movies (SBO) will start at channel 121 with 3 channels also available on channels 40, 41 and 42

Sky don't carry Al Jazeera, but they have Fox News.

I'd have it the other way around for serious news.

Thought there was no more space on sat for new channels, which means for new channels bit rate has to be lowered, or they close some of the pay per view channels.

They're creating "space" for more channels in their channel numbering system, not chucking a whole lot of new channels up right now.

Long term, they will go MPEG4 once they get rid of the older decoders and create a bit more space then. (They can probably increase the number of channels by 50% and maintain the same poor quality with MPEG4).

God our pay TV is disgustingly crap.  Devoid of 1080 content and content in general!!!

That's why I don't buy it. It really needs some competition to improve the offering. HD should be standard with pay tv, and shouldn't be an extra cost.

Just hope they park Optus 10 at either 156E or 160E

THis new numbering system is going to play havoc with my family.

I have two young children who know the numbering system by heart and I know the channels that I like to watch.

THis is going to be a major headache for a wee while...

I do hope Channels 217, 218 and 219 will be pushed to the far end.
Always amusing seeing people sequentually move thru channels and get stuck on these !
