Got a phone call today from someone identifying herself as from Sky and asking if I still had my IGLOO box (mine was actually a review unit so that was sent back ages ago). She told me they were calling to offer something to IGLOO users, but didn't tell me what...

Any ideas?

Lol I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Did anyone actually buy Igloo?

I was well excited about the concept until I saw the prices for the one off pay content.

Neon is coming and seems a much better approach from sky, but still no sport.

I was well excited about the concept until I saw the prices for the one off pay content.

Yeah like you I thought about it for the one off payments for sport, and while costs were expensive - they didn't seem outrageous - unless you wanted multiple games a month.....but also the number of games accessible were too low - so I skipped it.

I think I saw them advertising on TV, something like free igloo box, 6 months free on all channels. I missed the rest, but presume if it is if you sign up for a fixed term. Maybe they are trying to offer something similar to existing customers to keep them happy too.

*EDIT* its on the website too. Guessing they are going to say that if you sign up now for a year, you get 6 months free as well.

If they had a sports channel pack I might be interested.

There was no word on HD over terrestrial on these things though from memory.

It seemed a good product for 4 years ago, but with the advances both NZ internet speeds for home users and online digital content provider options, a physical box seems so old fashioned now and moving forward.

I had a good conversation with a family member who admitted that Sky's core customer base is the likes of him really, older people shelling out lots every month and adverse to change.
He was asking about online streaming options as he finds the movie offering on Sky a bit stale with endless repeats and it's not as up to date as the local video store sort of thing.

What's interesting was his 'awakening' as such to break out of the Matrix and to enquire about other options. Sky will need to adapt, but I don't see Igloo as the modern solution.

We can find free streams of most sports on Sky (wysiwyg), so for us Igloo makes good sense. The price point now is reasonable: $100 for the box and $20/month for a decent bundle of channels. Mostly we watch the BBC products. But even more often we watch things on iPlayer and 4od. :)
