Basically i want to get rid of sky in the house!! Alternatives??
If it was up to me neftlix would be it but the wife stills wants her cooking shows and the kids still want their cartoons.
So what im after is an alternative to mysky that the wife can record on.
Ive heard of open box in the uk but not sure if its available in nz.
i have a very! basic knowledge of streaming etc and was wondering if any of you fine people could give me some ideas??
I have 3 tvs in the house that need to connected to whatever alternative to sky i can find, one main tv in the lounge for the recording and one in kids bedroom, the other tv will be connected to netflix(mine!!)
Any help or ideas would be appreciated!!
Sorry if its the wrong forum!!wink

Netflix (and Lightbox for that matter)  both have masses and masses of cartoons for the kids

But I feel your pain on the 'cooking shows'.  My wife is the same.  However, freeview with Choice TV gives her enough of that rubbish so I managed to persuade her to ditch sky and rely on freeview + PVR

Food TV is just so good, it plus rugby keeps us paying $100+ a month for Sky and Also Netflix on top.

MileHighKiwi: There are tons of food related channels on the Roku...

http://www.rokuguide.com/channels/food

And I second Netflix for Cartoon content. In fact, it's waaay better than Sky's offering. For example, you can select what to watch
based on characters.

My device of choice is FireTV :)
Another box would just make things complicated, though I admit there are some nice channels there.

One of the things about Food TV on Sky is the amount of NZ material.

You got that right. Makes me feel I am paying $10 each food show, and $30 a game. May as well just buy the food instead of watching it, and get a ticket for the game!
(In my case its not the food shows, but NatGeo, Discovery)

It should be game over for sky as more people wake up to streaming on demand at sensible prices... but they do have oodles of cash so will probably be able to hold onto the rugby for a few more years keeping us kiwis on their hook

Thanks for all the suggestions people!!smile
I used to have sky sports, rugby channel and soho on top of the basic package but after the false advertising of this years six nations i dumped them.
When i rang sky to complain they said i could use their new online streaming to watch the game! Asked if they could guarantee the stream as i still had to pay for the sports channel to be able to watch it, they said no funnily enough, and then offered me the movies for 3 months for $15 a month.
So for sports now i stream with vipleague online!!!
I personally think sky will be around for a long time but people are waking up slowly, the only reason i had them was for the mysky. Untill other companies compete sky will keep their grip on nz.
So as it stands, main bedroom internet streaming on tv, more than likely netflix, lounge still undecided but with a pvr, kids room internet streaming!!
Pros and cons lightbox, igloo, freeview etc?
Cheers peeps!!

We cancelled Sky as soon as our two-year contract expired. Felt good.  smile

It was completely painless, and we soon realized that most of the programs that we had been watching &/or recording were on Freeview anyway (we are not sports fans).

We'll be seriously considering Netflix later this month (we have cable and a VPN service)

I am in countdown mode until Netflix arrive.. I want to cancel Sky but wife loves CI channel, will see what the doco's on Netflix are like and fingers crossed once i get the official ok from here Sky is goneburgers

As far as devices go, chromecast on tv's should sort Netflix and eventually Lightbox out, no real solution for local ondemand service other than watching on iPad/PC, will need to get some form of freeview aerial sorted

Exciting times ahead, not sure if the convenience or the demise of Sky will put a bigger smile on my dial!!

Lol everyone here is a Sky hater! Dunno why, they are just a service. The competition is here, so where have they been?

Back to topic. Docos are my issue. Does Netflix have much in that?

As a non user it seems to be one of the mysteries of the world trying to track down a full and final type program listing for Netflix :P

I'm quietly confident there will be enough content to sway SWMBO

To answer your question what's a good alternative to MySky the Wife can record on, I recommend the Panasonic recorders. I have the DMR-BTW840 works really well.

I have this model too and it works really well. Streams broadcast and recorded content to all the other tellys in the house over wifi.

Just got one of these yesterday and it seems good. Set up all my recordings, played with the network streaming, both from PC to Freeview box and from box to iPhone, and it worked well. I have Netflix and Hulu Plus streaming on Apple TV, and if you really want to retain a bit of Sky without the costs, you can get NowTV's 'Entertainment' package for 6 pounds a month (I use Unotelly to geo unblock) and that gives you about 13 UK Sky channels, including Disney, Nick and Nick Jr for the kids. No cooking, but if that's a deal breaker I believe Igloo has Food Channel - though not with the MySky recording feature. I had a similar issue with property shows until I discovered the English 4oD app which has all the ones I want.

But......did you cancel the evil Galactic Empire known as Sky???

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much
