I see that this year's Wimbledon tennis coverage is NOT on SKY at all and only on TV1 until 6am. After 6am, it appears that you can only view the tennis on Freeview Channel 15.

When you pay all that money to SKY, it's disappointing that this event is not covered by SKY especially because we don't have Freeview TV to watch the tennis broadcasts that are not screened on TV1 after 6am.

However, if I don't want to watch the tennis after 6am on internet, and you don't have access to Freeview 15, then it seems that you're going to miss out?

So, is it really satisfactory that TV1 should get the rights to a major sporting event if they can't even show it on TV1 after 6.30am and can't provide continuous coverage on the same channel?

I guess you can't access Freeview Channel 15 using a SKY decoder?

So is the only way to watch Freeview 15 to buy a Freeview decoder and aerial?

On Igloo, it has appeared as channel 20. Probably the same on other Sky boxes.

Thanks for your reply. My SKY decoder doesn't produce a Channel 20, and Channel 15 is "Comedy Central".

So, it looks like SKY aren't broadcasting the Wimbledon tennis that can be seen on Freeview Channel 15 after 6am even though SKY does broadcast TV1 and the Wimbledon tennis that is broadcast by TV1 up until 6am.

The issue I have is TVNZ are not doing any 1 hour daily highlights package, as Sky usually does, which I always watch for the early matches before the serious stuff later in the competition.

My understanding is that the scheduled play is meant to end at or before 6 AM. Therefore you only have to go to the internet stream if play runs overtime. Maybe I'm wrong?

With regards to Sky, TVNZ and rights...
This article says that Wimbledon prefers rights to go to free-to-air broadcasters:

I generally prefer not to rely on Stuff for accurate info. However, if you accept that premise, the situation becomes somewhat understandable. I for one applaud Wimbledon for their attitude.

Do you mean TVNZ aren't showing a 1hr highlights package on TV ONE?
I'd be very surprised if there aren't highlights packages available on TVNZ's website and/or Freeview channel 15. The TVNZ press release certainly suggests that such content would be available:

Maybe highlights are available on the pop up channel. I haven't got the EPG to work yet. I was hoping it would be on TV1 in HD.

I can't get on board with your complaint. TVNZ have the rights to Wimbledon allowing hundreds of thousands (if not millions) more people to watch it than if it were broadcast on Sky. Most people have freeview and it is of no consequence whether it is broadcast on freeview 15 or TV One.
That's like complaining about Sky broadcasting something on Sky Sports 2 instead of Sky Sports 1 (I think that analogy stands - but I'm not sure as I don't have sky and wouldn't put it past sky to cripple one channel in some way when compared with the other).

Freeview is our national TV standard. Sky is not. I don't see the problem?

I was glad to see it is on Channel 1 / 15. There are less and less reasons to have sky these days - glad to see they are reducing even further.

You know, freeview isn't that hard to get. Much easier than $80-$100 per month for Sky.... :)

I am a little staggered that someone is complaining that it is on FTA television.
More power to TVNZ for picking up the rights.

Freeview isn't hard to get, as mentioned above it is built in to nearly every new TV sold in the last few years, and if you do not live in the UHF coverage area (and you obviously have a Sky dish) then hooking up to Freeview Satellite is also very easy.

Thanks for your replies and I can understand your point of view!

What I meant was that we don't have a Freeview aerial set up and neither do we have a video recorder that can record the Freeview video. Yes, our TV itself has Freeview but when I subscribed to SKY, I thought this system would give us all we need, and usually it does! If we want coverage of the tennis after 6am we now have to pay for the installation of a Freeview aerial and we also have to buy a video recorder. OK this may not be a big deal but it is a nuisance when we are already paying a lot to SKY to have their sports channels. After all, the Super Rugby, netball, etc etc isn't live on Freeview.

So the question is, why can't a SKY decoder give people access to Freeview channels so that SKY subscribers don't need to have two aerials and two recorders?

For SKY subscribers (this is the SKY forum) it sucks. Yet another sporting event we don't get - despite the annual fee increases.

For the general public - great. But we don't have Freeview at home, so no tennis.

The POP UP channel is not on Freeview Satellite which shares the same as SKY, if the pop up channel was to broadcast on Freeview Satellite then I am sure that SKY would have access to this channel as well. However this is no the case, there could be many reasons as to why TVNZ couldn't provide this..

SKY has all the available Freeview Channels on Satellite (Excluding Freeview HD channels) when a new channel is on Freeview, then SKY gets it, If a channel is removed then SKY gets it removed as well.

Thanks very much for your post. I have checked with Freeview and was told that Channel 15, which they use to broadcast the Wimbledon tennis after 6am, is a temporary channel and that I should check with SKY to see whether this channel is available using my SKY decoder.

So I checked with SKY who advised me that Freeview Channel 15 is not available to SKY viewers.

If you are a SKY subscriber you can get the Wimbledon tennis on TVNZ 1 up until 6am, but after that their Breakfast Show takes over.

So, Freeview Channel No 15 shows the Wimbledon tennis after 6am but SKY advised me that your SKY decoder cannot receive this channel.

It actually costs quite a lot to receive the SKY sports channels. If all you want to see on SKY is their sports channels, it costs a minimum of about $77 per month because you must also subscribe to their start-up package.

I think that these days you should be able to select the particular SKY channels that you want to subscribe to and just pay for these. If all you want is SKY sports, then a monthly fee of $28 (instead of the current $77) would be a lot more attractive!
