Is there a better way of recording channels from Igloo than manually with a DVD recorder? Like a third party set top box or a recorder with the Igloo EPG?
There are no third party boxes/recorders that are compatible with Igloo as far as I am aware.
Manual recording is the only way, as far as I am aware, to record the service. Either over composite to a DVD recorder (as you appear to be doing), or via HDMI to a computer (assuming you have the right hardware to do this).
No I don't have one I was just considering it because I'm about to pull the plug on Sky. I just signed up for Netflix which is far better value for money than Sky. I hate paying $50 for the 5 channels I watch. Igloo has all the channels I would be missing but I need to record them. Doing so manually would be a pain in the ass. The sooner Sky comes out with a "light" package the better. Eg. 10 channels + FTA with My Sky.
The 'best' (I say that in quotes as there is no good way of doing this) is to use a PC, like a HTPC, and a HDMI capture card like the Hauppauge ones that ignore HDCP, and use a IR blaster. That way the Igloo box becomes and external tuner, and you change channels with the media center remote. You can schedule recordings on any channel and have a full EPG.
I used to do this exact method when I had Sky (without MySky) and it works fine.
Only issue is the guide data, but I am sure that is available on one of the services, some of which are on geekzone, like the EPG collector.
Not entirely on-topic, but from a recent Igloo survey, I suspect that Sky is thinking of pulling the plug on it. One option they suggested was the Igloo channels via a Sky box for the same price as igloo, only with a contract... So basically a $20/month Sky. Our igloo box is only used by my flatmate, and she'd be happy this this deal, as long as she gets the same channels.
To get back to topic, my flatmate does record Igloo with a DVD recorder sometimes.
