Hey guys.

I plan on making a "Highlights video" at the end of the year. I've been making a few recordings on my box, just wondering if its possible to copy them to USB so I can move the files to my laptop? Or is it harder than it sounds due to copyright etc.

pretty sure you cant as that functionality hasnt been enabled. and if it was it would be encrypted so it could only be played on a skybox

No. What you want to do it also technically illegal as format shifting of video in NZ is not permitted.

The only way to get video off the box is AV outputs into a PC.

Sbiddle is correct.

For SD you can move the material onto a PC (or a DVD recorder) using the yellow-white-red AV inputs. Some channels will (l assume, as I don't have a MySky) be copy protected, so this won't work unless you have particular hardware to cope with it. For instance, the old Hauppauge capture units didn't recognise analog copy protection, and there are also removers.

For HD you would need to use the HDMI output. This requires a PC, as well as special hardware to process the signal and capture the video. This will run you to a couple of hundred dollars.

Both methods only work in real time, and involve some quality loss.

Also, as sbiddle points out, depending on the material in question and whether your use intended qualifies for one of the exemptions in the Act, what you propose may be technically illegal. So you have to decide whether you are comfortable with that.

The above is correct you are not able to do it unless you record them off of the box.

The usb is disabled (apart from special USB keys tech have to update them) and the ethernet is enabled but you are not able to get at the HDD as its protected but the software, same for wifi access too.
