I have had my MySky hooked up to the internet pretty much since the day it got "the update".

But it is only now that I am wondering "why have I got the phone line still plugged into it?".

Is the phone line completely redundant once it has internet or is it still used for something?

You sure that is still the case? My M-in-law had her old box replaced a month or two ago with the new MySky type and it's only gotten a WiFi connection. Looking at the menus you just click on rent and it's done. Just like their Ondemand service..

Telephone connection was never needed unless you wanted to interact or book movies etc. We've had Sky for over 8 years, both old and new upgrade boxes, and have never connected them to the phone line.

I had a "discussion" with sky about this.

Previously mysky had the phone line for booking movies etc but then they upgraded the OS and I networked to sky box to gigabits fibre and as the in demand function worked over fiber I cut and removed the phone line as it was a mess of exposed wires....

Couple of months later after happily watching free on demand content I tried to buy on demand film and while it would book the movie on planner and download, if i tried to play I would get an authorisation error..

Contact customer services who said I had to use the internet website or the app as Ethernet could only download and not authorise...lady agreed it was stupid. End result was 3 month of money saved from buying movies.

A month or two later rang sky about another issue and was told same thing.

Then one day I was on sky website and I thought I'd "feedback" that it seemed a silly requirement when I got emailed yo be told you dont need a phone line and they would look into it....

Then contacted me to say a block for some reason had been placed on my account for some reason and they had removed it do I could buy on demand movies over fibre after all.

(In 6th year of sky subscriptio)
Few lost movie sales there...

We still have the old decoder (just got the upgrade letter). It has no Internet connection. Years ago I removed the phone connection because we never used it. Then for some reason I decided to try to view a Box Office film just to see what would happen. It worked fine without the phone and we have never been billed for it though there is still a record of it in the decoder memory. I only did this once and have not tried it again. I don't know if it would still work and I would hate to get pinged for dozens or hundreds of films at $7 a pop years after the fact. I wonder if they will check its records when we turn it in.

I have just returned my Sky Box, it was one of the new boxes, the only cables I unplugged was the power, HDMI and Ethernet there was no phone line. All things worked including booking and on demand.

Your answer is:

The mysky HDi and mysky+ still use the Phone line to book pay per view, however in the absence of the home phone line and the presence of the internet, they will use the internet for that task of getting authorised to book and view the movie, it has the bonus effect of accessing sky ondemand.

I disconnected my phone line ages ago and connected the decoder I have to the ondemand and it just started using the internet to get authorised. No issues.

The skybox will only use the internet as it does not have a modem in it as such, either wifi or ethernet ONLY.

@wingbat45 thanks for clearing that up. I shall unplug the phone line, use that ethernet port for something else, and that also frees up a phone outlet on the patch panel. Its a win-win.

i think you miss understand, i believe his structured cabling delivers his phone lines via Ethernet jacks, so he can repurpose the "phone" jack at the patch panel to allow him to use the wall jack for something else
