Hi all

Currently have one of these decoders and I noticed its input is 12 volts, so it got me thinking with my caravan, as it has a 12 volt setup I was thinking about putting in a 12 volt tv and then using the decoder on 12 volt to watch sky. Don't really want to spend a huge amount on a rse tv or anything. So what I was wanting to know is where would I get a plug that I could wire into the 12 volt battery that would plug straight into the kaon? Any thoughts or ideas welcome.

I would NOT do it my self, its costly if you fry it

I don't have one of these but from the documentation it uses a fairly standard power connector. It also has an external power supply. Probably the easiest for you is to just take the power supply to Jaycar and ask them for a cable with connector that matches it. You need to be careful to get the polarity right when connecting to the battery. Ideally you should have a voltmeter to check it.

I wouldn't hook it up without using some sort of voltage regulator inline. With the motor running could get as much as 16 volts not to mention power spikes, surges and brownouts.

Should be OK without a regulator as long as you don't use it while starting the engine or with the engine running. Ideally use a second battery with isolator switch so you can connect it to the vehicle system for charging and disconnect for TV/Decoder use.

I'd suggest a low-dropout 12v inline regulator.

A standard in-line regulator requires around 3v to start regulating properly. The one I have linked will start regulating at 13v, or even 12.5v

You will also need a couple of capacitors, and a heatsink

The regulator's metal tab is connected to the output pin of the regulator, so you may also need a T0-220 insulating kit for the heatsink, unless you can ensure that the heatsink doesnt touch anything else.

Keep the capacitor connections close to the regulator.

I needed the same for a 12v lcd tv and ended up with a car laptop power supply that had a 12v option on it. I was worried it was a direct pass thru but it seems to regulate to 12v from whatever comes in so long as its above 12ish.

The reason I would be wary with the sky box is that it has a HDD, which takes 12v.

Otherwise you can just get a buck/boost power supply board and set it to 12v and that will keep it running thru cranking the engine as well. With the long bootup time on those sky boxes you really dont want it having to restart all the time.
