My parents just upgraded, they had the stock original Sky recorder. They asked for the best box.

They've been given a MySky+ without wifi.

I'm not sure what the differences are
- looks different
- new box only has HDMI
- new box has wifi

Is the rest the same? Same size HDD? Speed? UI and functionality?

Would appreciate some advice

MySky & MySky+ are the same except the Plus has a bigger hard drive

Neither has WiFi - that is an add on called a "Sky-Link"

The new decoders have built in WiFi but only a 500GB HDD

Both perform roughly the same performance wise

I've been trying to work out the difference in boxes:

200?: Sky box original, no HDD.

2005: My Sky. 160GB HDD?.

2008: My Sky HDi. 320GB HDD.

2011: My Sky+. 1TB HDD. Needs HDMI cable for HighDef.

2016: My Sky with Wifi. 500GB HDD.

I know that's incorrect but it's the best I've been able to work out. I couldn't find a list elsewhere.

Is that list close?

And if they asked for 1TB then the My Sky+ 1TB (with the wifi adapter) is the only option anyway?

The new box isn't named mySky.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

So ... if they've got the My Sky+ (as labelled on its right), it's a few years old and the ONLY way to get 1TB.

But performance wise same as the new Sky STB? No advantages with HEVC etc for satellite or broadband?

(I actually said to my parents that they probably don't need the biggest STB when they've got all the live / on demand stuff. Too late now...?)

New boxes don't support HEVC. I would guess that Sky will roll out yet another box in 2023 or so to support DVB-S2X HEVC and UHD transmission.

This box does not get hot like the others.

I've had no end of problems getting my Harmony universal remote to work with this unit.

Okay so the new Sky box has wifi built in and doesn't overheat. Only comes in 500GB. Harmony remote issues (my parents had a Harmony, now have a different brand so they'd be okay)

The older MySky+ STB they have has external wifi, gets hot, and is 1TB.

I guess for now it'll work fine. It's likely in 2 years time with software upgrades it'll start feeling the strain.

My old decoder is being replaced this Wednesday, currently i have the bedroom box splitting off via the modulator RF up the wall through the roof and into the computer room.

Do they provide a modulator with the new box as optional , if requested. Or do I need to go and buy an hdmi splitter and 15 meter cable?
