Just had new kaon skybox installed and I love it well my wife does lol. but friends keep saying it needs to be contacted to internet. Do I need to contect to internet? I don’t use that feature just watch tv as is. Are they gonna ring me every week to tell me to contect to internet? Or do they want to know where my decoder is all the time?? Cause that’s why they contect it to internet isn’t it?

It's how it will get software updates and bug fixes, and might be how the episode guide is updated.  Also on-demand stuff.

EPG is not delivered over Internet. Neither are software updates.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

"Does my SKY box or MY SKY HDi/+ need to be connected to the internet?

Yes, your SKY box has to be connected to the internet in order to get access to On Demand content such as TV shows, movies, sports, etc.

This is also dependent on your monthly services.

SKY On Demand offers you a huge selection of titles to download and watch, at no extra cost to your monthly subscription. Any shows or movies you choose to watch will be downloaded via your home internet connection and saved under planner on your SKY box."

Looks like it is mainly just for On Demand streaming.

I did wonder about the EPG part but figured software updates would be over the internet for sure. Interesting

It does not need to be connected to the internet to watch live TV or to get the EPG, remote record etc.

You do need to be connected if you want On demand or access to box office (via remote).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Always been the case, the older ones were OTA updates and did not necessarily need a phone line.
