Hi

I have a sky + box the small form one that every couple of days freezes up.

This can be rectified with a re-boot,which is a short term fix.

I know if I call sky they will send a tech out, They will change the box and I lose everything !

Can the box be backed up even if it is a couple of things we really want to keep, or a very long shot can the fault be fixed ?

Thanks

Not possible. Sky always says that recordings are not to be considered long term.

The only way to potentially do it is to record them on to another device that you have complete ownership/control of.

I know this doesn’t help you.

Don't they have HDCP on this too?

Hmm probably. So even that may not be an option.

Yeah but any of many devices will solve that and allow capture from it. Many HDMI splitters will "forget" to add HDCP back in on their output for example.

Yes. And from memory they can be had quite cheaply - circa $25.

A decent device to record off HDMI inputs will cost a bit more however - circa $200 from memory.

Or you can record off the analog outputs, which will give a worse (but adequate picture) if you have a DVD recorder and a device to deal to macrovision & CGMS/A (which are a bit hard to find now).

Googling should find you what you need, including current vendors and pricing, quite quickly.
