The Sky download on 22 Jan has changed the HDCP settings so my plasma will not now see HD channels. Its been fine up to then. Sky have swapped the decoder, HDMI cable and card to no effect. Skyguy rang his supervisor who confirmed the HDCP has been 'upgraded'. So there's nothing they can do. I pay for HDi so I can see HD, now I can't because of an action Sky have taken.
Anyone think this is unfair or a breach of contract?

So your plasma is not HDCP compliant? I assume?

Depends on their terms and conditions and wheter it specifys your responsibility to meet mininum requirements EG a HDCP compliant set - Same case could be said for a CRT tv owner expecting HD content.

Depends on their terms and conditions and wheter it specifys your responsibility to meet mininum requirements EG a HDCP compliant set - Same case could be said for a CRT tv owner expecting HD content.

But it used to work when I first got MySkyHDi now it doesn't because Sky have altered their specs.

Eg there specs are still the same they are just now enforcing themI would of assumed they would of required HDCP from day one - The fact they have only just implemented it is not relevant.

But do realise I don't know this for a fact - It is a combination on my asumption & vague memories of what I have been reading about HD content on GZ for the last 6-12 months.

Its not a breach of contract thats forsure! Sky have all the right in the world to upgrade the firmware on their equipment, and im guessing its part of there contract with the HD suppliers that they do upgrade it when new standards come out. Furthermore you probably consented to it when you signed up for the service (i haven't actually read the terms and conditions but id assume its in there, its common practice).
So the question being has sky just activated the hdcp token? or was it always there and they have just changed specs?

It's a known issue with Pioneer Plasma's being HDCP issues. This has been well reported in the UK.

Have a read of my post here from January about 1/2 way down the page.

I would suggest contacting Monaco and asking them what they are doing in terms of firmware upgrades. The original poster here says he was sending his box up to Monaco, presumably Monaco have the firmware update which will fix it.

Unfortunately for you this is not Sky's problem and they can wash their hands of this completely - it is a known Pioneer TV firmware issue.

All the while HDCP is supposed to stop HD content from being pirated, which is hasn't, and is making life hard for those that are not breaking the law...

Yes - but at $500 now for a HDFury they aren't cheap!

Your problem is much simpler however, it's a known issue with the TV and presumably Monaco do have the later Pioneer firmware which resolves it. There is no need to buy anything to fix the problem.

This is one of those situations where a standard is cludge. Both the Sky box and your Pioneer have been through HDMI/HDCP certification (which all are required to do) to confirm compatibility, however somehow in the early days of HDCP testing the Pioneers slipped through the full details were never disclosed. However in the UK Sky did make a change to enable Pioneer sets to work, this was done because at the time it was easier for Sky to roll out firmware updates overair rather than every Pioneer return to the factory/feild service for sorting. I guess the date for continuing to use non conforming firmware in the Sky boxs has now passed on the assumption that Pioneer have had the chance to fix all their sets.

What I can say is that the problem is easily fixed by the importer, they are the owner of the problem, not Sky.

Monaco/Pioneer have agreed to replace a board free of charge to fix this problem. Alls well that ends well.
