Someone was asking me, and I didn't know the answer. The MySky2 HDI recorder has the 'HD Over Component' output. Does it actually output full HD over this? They've tried it out of curiosity but the output is only 576i (and the HDCP warning comes up). Does the box actually output full HD out component? If so, does the TV need HDCP support on Component?

There is no HDCP support on component - only over HDMI & DVI.

Some HD output is protected and some isn't - you can view some output in HD over component but other channels enforce the ICT flag and will downscale to 576i over component and require HDMI for HD output.

I can't remember what channels do this - I'm sure somebody will know what ones do and don't.

Sport is in HD. That may be it I think.

Hi, Sky Sports 1 and 2 will output in HD over component as the ICT flag is not invoked on those, however TV3 and movies will downscale to 576i.

I have MySky HDi installed with both HDMI and component outputs to my 42" full HD TV. I can switch to either using the channel selector on my TV remote control. There is a small degradation of picture quality apparent in the component output but even so it is still much better picture quality than I get on SD. Most people who watch are unaware of the difference between the HDMI and component picture quality until I point it out to them.

To answer the second question about component output as full HD, from memory Sky transmits only at 1080i so a full HD picture (1080p) is not possible, even in HDMI. In my opinion the component output of a HD image is not quite as good as HDMI but its still way better than SD (standard definition). My understanding too is that HDCP does not work over an analog connection, which is what component is, only digital.

Hi, I've got MySky HDi and I run HDMI to a projector and HD Component to a 42" plasma TV. TV3, Movies 1 & 2 are both scaled back to 576i, however Sport 1 & 2 is in full HD on component. The remaining channels look fantastic on component, I think it’s because the decoder up scales the non HD channels to HD resolution.

The Picture quality is really close to the quality of HDMI, I find it rather difficult to distinguish the difference between the two. Sadly the only drawback is Tv3 and Movies; there is a noticeable difference on those channels.

If you were considering getting the HDi decoder, I would recommend you have an HDMI display but it you’re happy with having only the sport channels in HD you can still use component and get noticeable results over the older MySky or standard Sky decoders.

Tip: if you wanted to access the Installers Menu on the MySky HDi decoder, go to the setup menu, pres 0759 and then enter, you then have access to LNB setup and a few other hidden options.
