I've just upgraded my old mysky box for the HDi box. I've noticed that the picture quality for SD chanels seems better when I set the TV to component (AV) input compared to when the TV is set to HDMI input. But if I do that I lose the sound, why is that? And why might the picture quality be better through the Av cables? If the picture is better through component cables I'd like to get sound as well!

TV3 didn't look *that* much better than the other SD channels through the HDMI connection so I'm wondering whether the Sky bloke didn't set something up correctly?

Any thoughts / advice gratefully received!

Component doesn't carry audio, only video. You will need to run some a RCA cable for the L+R audio from the Sky box to the TV.

HDMI carries audio + video.

It's also not uncommon for people to observe better picture quality over component vs HDMI for SD material particularly with the MySky. Plenty of reasons for it that involve long answers..

Thanks for the reply. The AV lead that I'm talking about is a scart from the sky box to the the TV; the scart has 3 leads from it: red, white and yellow and all 3 are connected to the TV. Aren't the red and white leads the audio? Sorry if I'm being dim!

If you're using composite then the yellow and white typically are audio. You mentioned you were using composite however which requires 3 cables for the red, green and blue. I would assume it's a SCART-> Component adapter and just has a regular 3 wire cable instead of a component coloured cable which is red, green and blue. If this is the case you will need another cable ro run the audio over.

What colours are the RCA sockets on the SCART adapter, red, green and blue?

I think you meant to say typically the red and white are audio, the yellow is video..

Thanks. The scart becomes 3 leads, which are Red, White and Yellow and then plugged into the appropriate plugs in the TV, so I can't see why there's no sound. I might just re-boot the box and see if that does any good...

it sounds stupid but are you sure you have the cable connected correctly to the back of the tv? the audio ports you have the sky box plugged into are assigned to the same av video port?
If its all connected fine then its a mysky issue.. You dont have the hdmi cable plugged in at the same time? I dont have a mysky so this is a pure guess, but perhaps if the hdmi cable is plugged in it routes all sound through that and wont output any sound through the scart cable..

Thanks for the suggestions. The HDMI lead and the AV leads work concurrently. Re-booting the box twice has resolved the issue; I can now get sound whilst watching through the Av cables.

So perhaps the box wasn't fully initialised yeserday? Anyway, thanks again for your help.

If you are using composite video then something must be seriously wrong for it to be giving a better picture than HDMI!

I think you are confusing composite video (what you are using) and componenet video (what you are NOT using) when looking at threads. Composite is the poorest quality connection and there is no way it should give you a better picture than HDMI.

Out of interest, what universal remote do you recommend? I'd love it if the MySky remote simultaneously tuned on my Sony Bravia and MySky unit.

This is the point, you are confused. Red, White and Yellow carrying audio is composite NOT component. Component is Red, green and blue and carrys video only.

Anyway glad you are happy now.

Yep tkr001, you're right I was confused all along

Thanks for sorting me out once and for all. So I still do get a slightly crisper image watching SD programs through the composite cables than through the HDMI cable.

Comstar, I got the Logitech Harmony One. It will turn on your TV and MySky box and you can obviously control both mysky and your TV with the one remote.

Other Harmony remotes are available and all very good, but I've not read anything good about other makes.
