Sky plans to hand its UHF and radio spectrum back to the Government and trade them for digital terrestrial bandwidth.

Prime Maybe?

Nah.  They're going to set up their own DTT service separate from Freeview.. Hope they pick the same standards..

I assume this will include the Discovery/Trackside channel? Also does sky still own the frequency/transmitter for Maori TV? (they took over the old Sky News channel)

About time, The only people I know with UHF still is one family with it on the TV in a seperate building on the property that sky wanted stupid money to install a dish on... So if this means that freeview can get mux 4 and 5 online then perhaps there will be some more channels available??

Maori TV got allocated their UHF frequencies, they aren't Sky's anymore.

Also this doesn't include Prime's UHF frequencies.

If Johnathon Colman (Broadcasting Minister) had any cajones he would make them put prime on DTT.

I dont agree that the minister should make them do anything. But if they are not on FTA by the time the olympics come around I believe that there are some problems with their licensing of it. So if their analog license is gone by that them, then they will have to if they want to keep the good stuff for sky...

I know the analog licenses are up in 2012, just not sure of the timing with the olympics. IMO the broadcasting minister should announce that regardless of the digital uptake into peoples homes that the UHF band is going digital only on the expiration of those licenses. Most of the people that are too backwards to move to digital probably only watch TV1 for coronation street so will be unaffected by UHF going. The maoris have their allocation so they can move when they feel like it - seems stupid that they get to use kordias channels in addition to the freebe they got off the govt.

Ummm, I dont remember the details of the planning, but is not one of the current muxs infact one of the Maori allocated channels.

Could be wrong, will have to hunt out the discussion paper from MED, been a while since I sited it.

I don't believe it's the minister's job to do this.

What I think he should be doing however is refusing any further NZOA funding for Prime as it really is no longer a FTA TV channel - it's a pay TV channel.

Yes, you are probably right.

What I should have said was he should facilitate the creation of a regulatory environment whereby pay-TV monopolies could be encouraged to provide the FTA broadcasters they were allowed to take-over, in a free-to-air digital format.
Or did he just meet with them earlier this year for the tea and biscuits?

Its only Digital on pay TV, I can still watch it FTA on Analogue. Yes I would like to see Prime on Freeview but that is SKY TV's choice, once Analogue is switched off then for it to remain FTA it would have to be at least available to Freeview if not on it.

I aim to misbehave.

"At the Digital Future Summit in Auckland, the Minister of Broadcasting announced that a final date for analogue switch-off will be announced in 2012, or when digital television is available in 75% of New Zealand households - whichever happens first."

Surely with the freeview satellite service, digital television is now "Available" on over 75% of NZ households, if not 100% ??

With Sky TV at about 45% and Freeview at 11% Even if there is an 5-6% over lap where a household has both that is still 50% there is still a long way to go.

Māori Television is a Public Service Broadcaster just like TVNZ and as such is entitled to broadcast on both platforms.

I was reading "available" as being able to access, not as "have purchased a freeview box". Thats the way I interperate it. Just because someone hasn't gone out and bought a freeview box, it doesn't mean Freeview is not available to them.

It's the same as broadband it's available to x% of the population, but it is up to the individial houshold within the coverage area if they wish to use it.
