I'm almost certain you won't be able to use the Sky STB, as I think they don't let you tune channels yourself.
I assume you're planning to use an Aurora card here? If you are, I'm also pretty sure they also use different encryption (Sky uses NDS, I think Aurora uses Irdeto).
The exception is the Aurora network (Australian Free-to-Air channels broadcast via satellite), which for some reason is available here as well (if you have the card).

We have a card to the Aurora network, just wondering whether or not we need to buy a new STB, but it seems we will.
3m+ solid dish (not mesh) will get you the aussie spot beam on C1, but its low SNR and very susceptible to rain fade, plus almost everything is encrypted and subscriptions are only sold in Aus.
Yeah but Aurora is on C1, which you can get with a standard sky (65cm) dish and Ku lnb. In fact the dual 10750 sky lnb actually looks at C1 already with the 22kHz tone switched on.

Other than obtaining the card is there anything else one needs to consider? e.g. any other restrictions that are enforced?
Aurora is being pulled soon, a new service called VAST is already out to replace it. VAST uses ir2 and the cards are all locked to receivers, plus its all on the aust beam so you need a 3+ metre dish to get a signal lock in NZ.

When you say soon, its actually going to cease end of 2013, so looking at least 30 months yet ;) but that's OK because the world will end 21 Dec 2012 anyways.. LOL
