it seems since SS3 went HD, has anyone noticed that Sky are actually doing proper surround for overseas events such as NASCAR and S15 rugby?

However on the AV receiver it seems that they are now using 2 channel AC3 rather than the 5.1 channel audio they were using before.

Are Sky now using some sort of Dolby audio matrixing or something?  I understand it is possible to mux 6 channel audio in to two channels.

The Paris- Roubaix cycling, on SS1 the other night, showed as DD on my AV receiver if that's any help?

no, it's more complicated than that.

It's always Dolby Digital, it's just what comes out of it :)

Yeah I noticed the change as well. Up til SS3 went HD SS1/SS2 were full time 5.1 but with the surround channels muted when their source audio was only 2 ch. Now the signal in my receiver switches between DD 5.1 and 2.0 depending on the source.

yeah, that's exactly what it is.....

the ANZ Championship in HD on right now (filmed by OSB/Sky) has 5.1 audio, but the golf and ANBL replays on SS3 and SS2 are using 2 channel audio.

Watched TCGW on SS1 last night, 3 seconds of mute while my amp switches to 5.1 at the start of the show, then 3 secs more at the start and end of each commercial break as it goes back and forth between 5.1 and 2.0. I think I preferred the old setup with full time 5.1 and muted channels as appropriate.
