The only problem i have with the ads is I can't take a pee break in the time they are playing, then if you pause the playback you still have to watch the ad when you get back from the loo :(

Only problem I have with the ads on hulu is I find them more likely to glitch out and buffer.

All these apps, are seperata entities, they are competing, you can't really expect them to compete and also sleep together.

A better option is a box that plays everything, all the apps lined up in a row. You can imagine a single app, doing the consolidation, if the players were happy with that (less or no branding, etc)
And why not have streaming live TV? While its popular (as its the norm for MANY), if its there, play it. At some point in the future you can watch live or OD if all the catalogue is OD

Related, had to watch 3NOW VOD last night, as recording failed, I can mirror from Macbook to TV via Airplay, but iPad to TV via Airplay is unavailabl due to restricted content error message, and on the website it's not avaialble for that reaosn, why is that? Quality was just watchable, only just. Soft, just not smooth.
Not great at all. I will cable thwe ATV3 to my new AEBS to try , that will increase the already good as gold N wifi by a long way to the AC speed cable

Oh I know that, that is why it would be supreme value as they would have overcome those difficulties. But yes, for SVOD to work for me, I need a single app that brings everything together, in the same way that Sky does for linear programming.

Ideally, I would be able to watch linear programming as I still feel that has a place, especially with news programmes but then to be able to access on demand content without changing app.

Oh, I understand that, and I know many here have given up on Hulu+ because of the ads. But I think if we do move to a fully SVOD World, ads will still have a role to play, both in terms of informing consumers about products/content, and helping to offset the costs of bringing these services to the masses.

The value of doing ads online is that they can be more focused on the end users. Like Google ads that try to provided you relevant stuff based on what you do, TV ads could do the same. It's not hard to inserted targeted ads per sub... Much better for the TV networks to sell advertising and can be regional, program related, time related i.e sports game. There's a whole variety of new campaigns that can be created... including interactive.

Stop thinking linear TV over the internet !

Does the Roku do global reminders of new content outside of an app? For example, linear programming allows me to set reminders for shows that I want to watch, TVNZ Ondemand allows me to add favourites for things like watch first, both do not do global reminders of new content and I have to be either in TVNZ Ondemand OR Sky to get them. That is what a single app would do, aggregate content and providers and create a single place to manage all your shows, content and 'reminders'.

If we can get this, it would ease the transition to full VoD services; although I personally like channel browsing via an EPG as I do not know what I want to watch half the time and having to trudge through 'directories' or groups to find a program would be tedious!

The Roku does have the ability to aggregate your searches across the providers / apps you have i.e. if you search for "My Favourite Movie" it'll come up under "Vudu", "M-Go" and "Netflix" if you've got those apps installed on it.

There are lots of 3rd party apps (=channels) for the Roku, so perhaps one has been written to do as you describe - I don't know. If not, I think its API is fairly open - how good are you at coding?

No, it's US based. Don't think you can region switch it. There are tons of crap on the Roku...the main apps I use are Netflix (US), Amazon Prime, YouTube, PBS, History, Revision TV (For Tekzilla, awesome show)

It would be good to get TVNZ On Demand but I could care less about the other NZ apps.

Well I can aggregate all the sites and display in a tv friendly UI, but how can you play them back in a nice interface, especially the sites that use flash and need a fullscreen click.

Best I can think of is an app wrapper that hosts the ie browser and generates a click on the full screen when the page loads... but it would be kind of fragile

Ick. Are we *really* going to start using the non-sensical US version of this saying here?

It's *couldn't* care less, for the love of all that is Holy! These is absolutely no point or justification to add sarcasm to this statement as it stands.

And you can region switch the Roku - or at least there is a UK switch possible (which nets you the BBC iPlayer app). It *is* somewhat cumbersome to switch though - the Roku's region is determined by the account you use during initial setup. You setup a US or UK account via their website (using a VPN or DNS switcher or - heaven forbid - actually by being there). You then set up the Roku and sign in to said account. To switch, you have to factory reset the Roku, then reset it up and sign into your other geographic account.
