i hope that that is the case. that they're trying to redo their hardware to be a PVR. then, i would be very interested. They're delayed now, and they can't do anything about it. all they can do is deliver an excellent product (PVR one of them) to justify the delay.

The biggest selling point for this box has to be the analog switch off campaigns,

They have now missed Hawkes Bay, and unless they pull finger they will miss the rest of the South island when it goes in April 2013,

Getting people to shell out $$$ for an extra box when they already have DTT freeview just makes the path to success so much harder....

Very good post. And by showing their cards early, then failing to deliver, even now, I suspect the point of failure for Igloo has arrived already, and not just for Hawkes Bay. The amount of $70 - $199 Freeview STBs that have been sold already through The Warehouse, Noel Leemings, HN etc must be huge - and I can't imagine more than a tiny % of those consumers wanting to also buy Igloo.

By not being on the shelf already, they have simply missed out on sales, there is no two ways about it.

I will consider getting Igloo mainly for educational content plus cartoons for the kids, and the odd PPV ABs game (top tier stuff as mentioned by others). But as someone who won't buy Sky, but doesn't mind buying another STB, I can't really imagine that I'm representative of a large enough group of consumers.

Anecdotally, the DSO here in HB has gone well, everyone I know got switched in time, and got their parents/grandparents sorted too (or asked me to help lol).

I doubt It. That would completely change the value proposition of what igloo is. The main point is that it only costs 200 bucks. Adding a pvr would ratchet that cost up massively, and also make it more appealing vs mysky, which sky definitely do not want.

The whole point of Igloo is to aim at the budget conscious. They are part owned by sky so why would they compete with sky? PVR would be expensive and would sit them in from of their owners so, no pvr.... Just free view with a nice, non contracts option for the budget conscious.

Also, they haven't failed, because they haven't even started yet! Sky was delayed when it first started, and look at it now!

Igloo is just a way for sky to use their UHF allocation so they dont lose it to someone else.

I expected it to suck, but to actually launch, not just be delay after delay.

Everyones saying aimed at the budget conscious but I also keep seeing everyone asking for a pvr function as well. There are plenty of box's out there for around $200 that seem to be able to be a PVR if an external drive is used so surly adding that software wouldn't be a huge task? Personally have no intention of getting Igloo as their suggested pricing on pay-per-view sports is more than I am prepared to pay and that would be the only reason I would be interested in the first place. I wouldn't pay the subscription price for the other channels as freeview seems to cover most base's there anyway.

You don't have to subscribe or pay per view. You can use it purely as a freeview box with the other options there should you ever change your mind.

Yeah i get that, except as has been said before no recording. I got my set top box's well before Igloo was even mentioned anyway, so they where late to the game even with there original announcement. So i won't be buying yet another box just to have the option of some sport occasionally.
Now if they had it online and could be accessed that way i would def be interested. To me it seems that stuffed streamed over the internet is the way forward- just wish someone would actually get on and do it.

Agree with Cloudy completely. Costs are just unreasonable for one off events, which is my basic requirement from Sky.

Given it hasn't launched yet I don't think we can confirm anything, unless someone has got an inside line on the unit/s and service. By the time it releases, assuming it actually does, you may have to pay for the base extension, we just don't really know for sure.

I lost interest when they said that all the premium stuff will only be standard def.

They could have easily done what they are proposing with all the antique sky boxes that people are upgrading from. No new DVB, use the existing dish that is on most houses, and just use a new accounting backend that allows for prepaid etc.

But that would result in them not using DVB-T channels they were inexplicably given with the demise of analog UHF sky, so they would go to someone else who might poach customers. Better to let them all get used offering a double up of content on a different pricing model just to help mr murdoch and friends not have to up their game on their current packages.

Use of standard definition sat boxes would be be a pointless exercise given that Sky have to make the transition to S2 H.264 one day and these boxes can't be used after that point. Also, the DVB-S mpeg2 transmissions are so vulgar in respect to image quality they aren't really a marketable item unless you get 50 channels at once. 12 wouldn't be worth $5/month. T2 H.264 at 3 Mbps at least gives images that are bearable on any modern TV.

I have had the opportunity to see the sky igloo test transmissions they appear to be slightly crisper with less artefacts around writing than the equivalent sky sd satellite channels so it looks like the dvbt2 and h.264 codec works well
