That means it will also not work with BD players (maybe it will with cheap unbranded BD players), because BD players require HDCP.

True. I am not buying a new TV to watch BR or to get HD on PS3.

A stripper would solve my problem. I know they are not legal in USA. I don't know the legal position in NZ.

The TH50PV80AZ IS HDCP compliant. It even states on page 41 of the manual (at least the one I found online) "These HDMI connectors are compatible with HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) copyright protection"

You are right. It says the same in the hardcopy manual. That seems to be the only place it is mentioned.
I will have to do some further investigation into why PS3 gives a black screen on HDMI.

sbiddle: My Sky HDi should have HDMI and component output. It does not have RF unless you buy an additional modulator.

Secondly using the DVI input won't work well with HDMI output as DVI doesn't supprt HDCP which is required for copy protection. The vast majority of monitors have HDMI these days anyway.

This isn't true. DVI and HDMI are actually the same connection, with a different plug (also, I believe DVI cannot transport audio, but happy to be corrected here). It absolutely can support HDCP as it is essentially HDMI in drag.

Depends what you're using it for. If it's just to make it interoperable with your existing equipment, I believe that is legal as we have clauses allowing defeating copy protection for interoperability. So you could use an HDFury or similar if your goal is only to make it work on your TV.

HDMI specs require HDCP, if the device has the HDMI logo on it, then it has to meet spec.

Therefore it either does HDCP or is faulty.

Hi

My son figured out that the PS3 only outputs to HDMI if the TV and PS3 are connected before turning on the PS3.

This confirms that my TV is fully HDMI HDCP enabled.

My original question has been answered by my wife who brought the LCD TV. I don't need to plug into a LCD monitor.
