most likely a feature that a bean counter decided had to be there to protect their hold on the content, but making this known would more than likely make people not buy it.

this is typical what happens when the broadcaster also makes the receiver.

a similar thing happened with tivo here, tvnz dema demanded that the 30 second skip feature be removed on tivos sold here.

kiwirock: They would have been better off just launching a cheaper 11 channel satellite package given the dishes everywhere and Freeview SD already on it too.

Ahhh, but you see: they had a "use it or lose it" condition on the terrestrial broadcasting slot, so there was a strong incentive for them to go terrestrial or risk allowing Freeview or others to take their slot. The fact that having a terrestrial platform helps them differentiate Igloo and Sky and introduces a few more barriers to switching from Sky down to Igloo is probably viewed as positive as well.
