Sooo... 'First run' in NZ, or CURRENT releases timed with 1st run internationally? (see Netflix/HBO etc threads)

Just cos we in NZ doesn't mean we want to wait months on end for new season content.

Would love to support local, but require it to be comparably priced, and up to date too!

Any chance GoT will make your lineup anytime soon?

The way Netflix does it is by not bothering to register the device but to monitor the number of simultaneous streams from the account.

TThat would be a better solution and way way smoother for the viewer, I hate services that require per device registration then require me to wait 30 days to change it.

Until you change your policy I'll be sticking with Netflix.

Netflix has device limits, it's a general requirement from content providers.

Our household would be a great candidate for that! All our TV watching these days is primarily through streaming services, so we have a pretty good handle on how well the opposition works.

Your content looks promising, but it all means nothing if there isn't an easy way for the average non-tech user to get it from the Internet onto their 50" TVs. Ideally I'd love to see apps for common set top box devices (e.g. Apple TV or Roku), but as that won't be available for launch, I'd be keen to test out how well the iPad->AirPlay->Apple TV combo works. In my experience with this, it can be quite hit and miss.

I am very happy with our Airplay implementation - but it's always interesting to let it out in the "wild" and see how it works for a bigger number of people.

Our initial device line up is just the beginning, though Apple TV is an invitation only platform on a global scale (so Apple has to pick you over whoever else they could be working with across the world). Roku has a pretty limited presence here, obviously.

Our top quality will be 1080p, but it will depend on your device, connection and the specific show (some content simply cannot be sourced in higher quality, e.g. kids content and some content providers limit the quality offered for online streaming). Our bitrate will top out at 5 Mb/s for the PC/Mac and iPad, but our platform has been built to handle even higher levels of quality.

Lightbox - some questions for you:

Does that mean the AppleTV will get a higher bitrate (you only mention PC, Mac and iPad above)?

Are there any plans (with dates) for when other devices will be added? It would be great if Spark could detail exactly what devices it plans to support. Roku? Fire TV?

Will there be a guide of some sort detailing what is HD and what isn't? (Netflix has (had?) this ability)

Do the PC/Mac applications support remote control devices? And are they designed for 10-foot usability?

Again - will differ from show to show (and how the content provider is set up to deliver their video files). We're not doing classic broadcaster planning and releasing content according to viewer seasons etc.

No GoT, that's exclusive with someone else in NZ. But plenty of other fish in our sea, though.

Chromecast isn't available officially here, so the number of actual devices is pretty low (but probably pretty high on GZ). It's definitely on our radar, but hard to justify spending the cycles on while it's not readily available to consumers.

Apple TV is invite only. So it's more up to Apple than us. We'd certainly love to get on there.

We're not going above 5 Mb/s for launch for Airplay.

We'll be looking to quickly add more devices to our line up, but I can't give you any details yet (since there are both technical and commercials arrangements to finalise around most of these platforms).

With regard to the Netflix/Amazon originals (House of Cards/OITNB, Alpha House etc) are they on an 'express from the US' type arrangement (i.e. Season 2 of HoC/OITNB already up) or are Free-to-Air rights still getting in the way?

Any hints as to what sort of old content will be available to stream (i.e. 5 year+ old stuff)? All the announcements are the 'hip, current' shows.

Additionally, with the 5 devices thing, how strict is it with regard to adding/removing/swapping devices etc? (Switching browsers etc would I'd imagine count as two different devices etc) - Quickflix used to require calling them to reset registrations (which was a PITA), SKY have a horrible system where you can only swap out 1 device every 30 days, and vague/default device names don't help (i.e. guess work/lucky dip).

We may do another round and get some additional GZ's on once we clear the initial wave.

Some originals are first run on TV and we'll have second run. For other stuff, it'll come straight to our service and we'll have the first run.

Registration works on device level, so switching browsers shouldn't cause another registration. You'll only be able to delete one device off your account every 30 days. The content providers typically enforce the same restrictions in all their contracts. Hopefully, we've made a painless and smooth as possible.

Hmmm that restriction could get annoying, BUT, if say Chrome, IE and Firefox on the same PC use of the same device slot (and it's labeled somewhat sanely) then I guess people won't notice. Seriously, this was the thing that bugged me the most about Quickflix, I think I managed to get the same browser/PC registered 3 times and then locked out of the manage devices thing because Silverlight was such a nuisance.

Any particular older shows you're looking for? With over 5,000 hours, I am sure we'll have sometime you'll like...

Anything from CBS or NBC/Universal/Paramount? (Thinking along the lines of MASH, Cheers, JAG, Wings, ER, Third Watch (this one seems uber rare), House etc) Additionally along the lines of uber-rare to stream (and one I'd like to check out), Roseanne (Paramount/Viacom (likely the reason why it's impossible to stream in US)/ABC).

Techie question what is the player running on(Flash Silverlight)? Are you planing on implementing the upcoming DRMed version of the HTML 5 Video standard?

I only ask because I would hate to have to reinstall flash or silverlight onto my computer to nuke my cpu all the time. Been living without both of these on my computer for years now.

Wow, I didn't actually know that (sorry slightly OT). I assumed it was more like the App Store for other iOS devices.
