invisibleman18: And of course they still have the majors, Ryder Cup and various other big tournaments so those who are interested are still going to have to keep Sky and pay out for the new provider. With this starting to happen more and more, people who are interested in several sports are going to end up having to pay out for multiple different services to watch them. Interesting to see which sport is next.

Exactly. While many here complain about Sky, and want more competition, when that comes, they may end up paying more.

dcole13: YES! This must be good if PGA isn't on Sky.

why, golf is made for full HD on a big screen and going by the trouble people are having with the EPL stream, i dont hold out much hope.

Golf has been in SD (and worse) and on smaller screens for years and years.
It is definitely not not 'made for the big screen'

Disagree... HD is awesome when watching Golf... Those scenery shots!... SD - I don't even bother watching it.

I am not an avid golf watcher, however I like watching it on Sunday morning in the background as they have some awesome views from around the world... Just like the cycling.

There must be lots of people not really interested in Golf like me but watch it for the picture...

you seem to be disagreeing with something I didn't actually say.

golf looks better in HD?  Agree. But since basically everything looks better in HD it's a bit of a nothing statement.

Gold is made for the big screen and HD?  Nope.  Golf has been around for a lot longer than HD and big screens, and people have been watching it for years on crappy TVs in low definition.  It is not 'unwatchable' in SD

k14: Anyone know if there is a subscription service like Netflix but for golf that can be streamed using one of the IP masking services?

For the US PGA's next event, there seems to be http://www.pgatour.com/live.html Featured Groups, or Golf Channel (You need someone with a US Cable sub for that) or NBC Sports (2 days) all seem to be geoblocked.

I'm not sure if you are using your own viewing habits to come to this conclusion but many of my friends (except one) only watch/follow - in any serious way - 1 or 2 sports, 3 max. Anything else is just because it is on. People that will lose are massive sport geeks that watch anything and everything but that's not really the majority in my own experience.

And just because sport is moving to a direct to viewer approach that doesn't mean it will stay that way. You might see prices come down because of competition but you might also see the likes of packages as well, although cheaper because one provider can no longer demand exclusive rights.

Ah, I just missed the mark I think... Oops

What I should have said:

They use a lot of HD picturesque shots to entice more viewers to watch golf. Yes they shot golf in SD years ago, however you'll probably find the camera work was more focused on game play rather than scenery when compared to now. (They now take full advantage of the HD and colours).

So in terms of making golf for HD? - I think they have now tailored it to suit HD over SD. And with people now expecting this kind of coverage, anything less (ie iSky) would be inferior. (But maybe still acceptable to some).

I am only going off how I remember SD golf... Could be mistaken.

Competition should bring down prices, as that is it's intention, as it allows xyz to compete againest abc with the same content. But the nature of TV is that it would lead to fragmentation, as it means some networks will have different programs from others, which essentially means you have to purchase from all the companies if you want to watch all the programs. So it isn't really competition, as different channels will have a monopoly on some content . The only way to have competition that would lead to lower prices is for different companies to have the same content. When monopolies exist, regulation maybe a a better answer, rather than competition that leads to fragmentation of content.

I hope there is a dedicated golf channel. Maybe this dream is just too much.
Saw the channel in US, Singapore, Malaysia. Not too bad 24/7 golf :)

Exactly my point, well extrapolated. TV content is unlike any other product. It can be exclusive. A Fridge may be also exclusive at one retailer, but while you can buy any number of equivalent fridges you cant buy an equiavlent, F1, MotoGP, Golf match, Breaking Bad. Who has the monopoly, or is it contrived? Sky, or the other TV provider, or the content owner?  The problem with un-exclusive content is the channel advertising is less revenue. Cannot garner customers if the TV provider has no value "I can get this anywhere, I will roam without loyalty" Needs a buy in from the top I feel. A whole new model

yup. Those countries get the channel from NBC Golf Channel.
But I don't think it will happen in here at all.
