I see no need to pay extra for DVR functionality. I already have that via connecting my existing (basic) decoder to my Panny recorder - with the added advantage of DLNA connectivity for TVs in other rooms etc. Unless the new decoder is twin-tuner and includes DLNA, I'm not interested.

Gouging me by shipping hardware with certain capabilities, deliberately disabling them, and then trying to ping me for extra to turn them on, would be very obnoxious. But, in any event, I'm close to dropping the Sky sub entirely in favour of a bigger data package from my ISP and Netflix/Hulu/BBC as content sources. I'm struggling more and more to see a value proposition from Sky.

Thank you for coming to the point that caused me to start this thread in the first place. We also have an old SD decoder and a Panasonic DVR and it all works just fine for our purposes. We have HD Freeview via UHF for the odd film (after commercial removal) and this meets our needs. What we don't have at our rural location is high speed broadband with unlimited data so streaming is not practical for us. What prompted my question in the first place was our wish to keep things as they are, to be able to feed an SD analogue signal to the s-video input of the DVR so we can record whatever we like whenever we like without any BS. For that convenience we are happy to put up with inferior picture quality. Anyway, the DVR upscales to HDMI which of course is not the same but good enough for us. So my question remains: HDMI aside, will we be able to input an analogue signal from the new Sky box to the DVR? Why pay all this money (and it is a lot) for something we can't use and don't want?

Ramjet007: Sky mag is free. I tried to cancel it and they said it was free.

It maybe be free cause you might have it for free on a special deal, everyone else pay like $2.70 a month for it

Page 68 shows the current MySky HDI box which one would assume is whats going to replace the older boxes. Has variety of different outputs.

you rent the equipment from sky, they want to upgrade to provide a better service to the majority of people. its no different to a rental car company upgrading their fleet to a newer car, "the old ones worked fine".

I just took a look at it and if that is indeed what they will be using I have no objection at all. It has a range of outputs so could easily be integrated into our existing set-up. We could even run the HDMI to the TV and the S-video to the DVR and have the best of both worlds. I also like the SCART connectors, which have RGB output on the old decoder. Unfortunately, Panasonic crippled their later DVRs to restrict input to S-Video.
