There will also be some new fault diagnostics for technicians. you'll be able to see hard drive running temp and rpm. if anyone wants to share any more info they have please do and as soon as i find out more ill update.

I would also like to know where you are getting this info, as some of this info may only be known by sky staff and which should not really be released yet.

Perhaps he read Foxtel's iQ2 manual. Because that's basically what he's describing.

Tech company or inhouse?

I would suggest then not to say much more as some info maybe incorrect and promising mysky box upgrades etc is not a smart move. Also how would you know if the software coding is the final version that customers will see?
When the information is ready to be released it will be done from the correct people from skytv, I am sure they don't need an "installer/contractor" to do it for them.

People need to learn to be quiet. Sky is quite protective of their IP and I see some people losing jobs.

The features being described here are actually something Sky's been kicking around for a while. I once got a survey asking a lot of questions about the very features that are being talked about. And having moved to Australia I've encountered Foxtel's equipment which are the exact same hardware, but with the extra features actually enabled (ethernet connection. on demand download to planner, etc).

We had Sky connected at our new place recently and the installer told me a few things about what's happening with their upcoming plans. I won't repeat what he said based on posts above but it's good to see them actually taking the Netflix et al threat seriously and actually doing something about it to make themselves more attractive to consumers. Simple economics of course when faced with competition, but long overdue either way.

I would be keen to know.. if Sky will be
- sending data packets via satellite & receiving via broadband?

eg I request to watch Breaking bad, but i only have a rural 3mb connection.. it maybe 3gb of video..
Will they send the video data via satellite to save onto hard drive? if they use the internet connection it will take hours if not days

No. Tough bikkies. If you want non standard technology then you develop it. And believe me, Sky downloads won't ever be 3 GB in size, if anything Sky will be into low bitrate marginal image quality IP services only to match their brilliant mpeg2 compressed to buggery vulgarities coming off the sat.

They do send Over The Air updates to the decoder now? woudn't have through it be much extra effort..

They already do send PPV movies out to the HDD on myskys. This would hopefully let them stop wasting a tuner and sat capacity on filling drives with content that mostly goes ignored. Sat capacity should only be for linear channels.

If it's low bitrate then there's no point them even doing the service,

IMO the only reason they're doing it is because of the competition from other streaming services on or coming onto the market, and if they offer it at low bit rate, then they'll lose business.

I'll judge when it arrives, for now everything just guessing.

And there wouldn't be enough satellite band width to send everyone an individual satellite stream, so it would all have to come from the internet connection.

If it's anything like Foxtel a movie could be anywhere up to 6GB (That's the largest I've seen anyway). It shows you the file size when you start the download.

The new on demand will be IP based and use your internet connection, if your ISP offers unlimited it might pay to look at that account type (that is a hint to bitrate).

Software updates to the decoder will still be satellite (as they are now).
