paulmilbank: Yep, I think so. Much like Igloo, Sky is doing the bare minimum to stave off new services and competition. You get the feeling they just want all this new fangled internet stuff to go away so they can get back to charging too much for a crap and expensive satellite service. Even there, with all that profit, they have put nothing into moving to DVB-S2 and H264 which would give better bandwidth use and picture for their viewers. But that would take rolling out new decoders instead of using the current ones which are so old now.

I think you will find they are going to be replacing all the old sky boxes for dvb-s2 devices this year and next.

Proactively or only for new customers?

Proactivly. I was told its because they cant do anything about the wide scale card sharing while the old boxes are still in use and nothing to do with providing a better service.

If you have $10 a month sky from someone, enjoy it while it lasts.

Funny we have 2 legacy decoders and just got call a few minutes ago offering us an upgrade to mysky. Yes later this year Sky will start a free replacement of all legacy Sky receivers. Once done they can remove the duplicate SD feeds of some channels, freeing up bandwidth. Also as the new receivers will have network access they can push their online services to gain extra income from the subscriber

Look for SKY to continue to charge extra fees for HD access and the ability to record on the new receivers! also look for them to give users the HD feed of some channels but downscale it to SD via the receiver if you didn't pay for the HD ticket.

Ah that might be what the call we got earlier was about. I don't know because the bill payer wasn't here, we need to ring them back. Was was the upgrade offer? Free mysky? We already have mysky but have multi room with a legacy decoder.

I got the offer and I don't have the asian channels.

I declined because:

the guy making the offer couldn't answer a few simple questions, about composite outputs and macrovision on the movie channels;
a main point of getting a MySky is HD content, and the HD ticket malarky irritates me; and
(apparently) a 12 month sign up with cancellation penalty was required to get it. I wasn't interested because after an unbroken subscription of around 18 years, I will more than likely cancel soon in favour of a Netflix (US) & Hulu Plus setup.

Otherwise I might have been in.

Hmmm, perhaps it is just to get people on a contract so that they dont bail for netflix then. Never know with sky eh...

no they are doing a big mysky push because the more people they get on mysky the less old boxes they have to replace with no extra revenue stream, it will be interesting to see exactly what the boxes are

So it won't even have all available seasons of the juiciest shows it has rights to. And does that mean it won't be streaming season 5 of GOT on/close to its air date either? There goes any use I had for this service.

Pretty crap. I see S4 is due out next week on BD/DVD. I wonder if they are sticking to DVD release dates for Neon? If so, it is no better than Netflix, probably worse than Lightbox (Netflix has never been for the most recent shows, unless they are Netflix Originals).
I will be looking into an HBO subscription when they remove the requirement for a cable plan.

I'd recommended no one to sign up to vodafone's free neon for 6 months then $10 for the next 6. you have to sign up to a 12 month term for both vodafone and neon (kind of defeats the point of join and leave when ever you want to, right?). you're paying vodafone not neon, so after 6 months your monthly charge goes up $10 even if you realise neon is useless and want to leave. also signing up for this offer means you can't also take the 1 month free neon already give you. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/legal/terms-conditions/neon-offer/

I would guess they would just be another Pace box similar to the existing MySky. I finally returned mine a few weeks ago. It was a thoroughly liberating experience saying goodbye to Sky.

My M-in-Law got a call before Xmas from Sky asking her if she wanted a free MySky. It was free install only you still had to pay extra per month for it..

If the get a SmartHub or AppleTV App (and HD with 5.1), I might check out the trial, otherwise, I am not interested.
