wombus: To answer your question what's a good alternative to MySky the Wife can record on, I recommend the Panasonic recorders. I have the DMR-BTW840 works really well.

Just got one of these yesterday and it seems good. Set up all my recordings, played with the network streaming, both from PC to Freeview box and from box to iPhone, and it worked well. I have Netflix and Hulu Plus streaming on Apple TV, and if you really want to retain a bit of Sky without the costs, you can get NowTV's 'Entertainment' package for 6 pounds a month (I use Unotelly to geo unblock) and that gives you about 13 UK Sky channels, including Disney, Nick and Nick Jr for the kids. No cooking, but if that's a deal breaker I believe Igloo has Food Channel - though not with the MySky recording feature. I had a similar issue with property shows until I discovered the English 4oD app which has all the ones I want.

But......did you cancel the evil Galactic Empire known as Sky???

As soon as the Cricket World Cup finishes, it's gone :) I've been a customer for more than 18 years, so not a decision made lightly. I just can't justify the expense anymore.

Sky is like smoking, its easier to give up if you never started.

Handed my Sky HD decoder/recorder back to sky last Friday. Was one of the first 1000 subscribers in NZ. They just have not moved with the times nor recognized loyalty for a number of years. Use to get specials as one of the first 1000 members but that club no longer exists. Saving NZ$133 per month. :-)

The ability to cherry-pick a handful of channels at a reasonable price, with no extra charge for HD would have kept me. I'll be saving $72 per month.

Surely the pricing will soften soon. Trouble is, I feel Lightbox and Netflix will have little effect in the short term as its percieved as a bit geeky. A bit of TV/newspaper advertising to show how easy it can be would go a long way. When Sky get a growing number of the same reasons why a subscription is being cancelled, they will have to act. I douybnt there will be huge price drops as they want to keep their ARPU intact as much as possible, I'd suggest they would drop prices a little then throw in Movies free, summit lime that

I had sky for many years, the hardest part of convincing the wife to cancel Sky was.... ooh noo how will I record my programmes? When I did finally convince her by buying the Panasonic recorder I had to wait over 2 months for her to watch every recording still on the MySky box. Finally got rid of it last October and will never go back to it with the current offering I just don't see value in what's on offer. I'll just patiently wait a few months for Game of Thrones and save my $.

I'm not greatly upset with the pricing, it's paying that much and then getting shows constantly interrupted by ads that irritates me. As soon as the current season of Game of Thrones is over (by which time Netflix will have launched and I will have tried Lightbox) I will look at cancelling.

I believe NowTV (UK Sky's online offering) shows GoT. At 6.99GPB a month, it's a good deal for 13 Sky channels.

Also a thing I have found with PVRs is they have a maximum  amount of future bookings that can be made and it's usually 25 or 32 (this is the planner that you book recordings in), My Sky is the only box that has no limit, you can set up as many things as you want to record as long as they don't clash,   One PVR I tried (a Panasonic) I called the help desk to ask why it has a booking limit and they said it's not my sky and 32 bookings is enough for normal use, I found I reached that limit quite fast and ended up having to delete bookings to book more things to record.

How do you find time to watch all the things you have recorded?  smile
I would imagine that you'd fill up your HDD pretty quickly.

I have the my sky + (1TB) I set everything I like to watch up to record and if I watch it I watch it and if I don't I don't, I don't have HD Ticket because it fills the hard drive too quickly, I go on a delete spree every now and again when the free space drops down to 52% or so because then the planner starts to lag when I scroll down it, I hate watching things live so I just record everything.

I am considering buying out of my Sky/VF. TV contract , SkyTV with the exception of few "premium" channels it is giant repeat fest constantly interrupted by self promotion.
I could subscribe to Netflix, Light box and Quickflix together and still be saving close to $100 per month. Currently it is only Sport that is holding us.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
