mattwnz: How come light box don't have an iPhone app. I mean even Neon has one. Big oversight I think

dunno about you,  but I have had Netflix for the last 3 years, and, despite downloading the iPhone app I have never once used it on my phone.  I've used it a lot on my ipad, and a lot on my PS4 (although it gets a lot less usage now that Lightbox is available)

My point is, if people are like me and aren't actually going to use an iPhone app, there is little point building it when you have limited resources that could be spent building an app that people will actually use (e.g. playstation).

(this may change with Chromecase though, since as pointed out you need a companion device to cast to it - something many people overlook when suggesting chromecast as a solution)

It is not about watching it on the iphone though, it is about using the iphone and the casting device and remote to the TV via the chromecast. It would be the same with netflix, where you use the iphone as a remote. The ipad is a bit big for this purpose IMO. I was somewhat surprised to see Neon already had an app for the iphone, although don;t know if they have casting abilities.

I find I'm using Netflix via android phone and chromecast a lot, mainly because the phone is a convenient (read remote control :P) size and is always on me, secondly I can play and control content for my preschooler to watch from where ever i am, no more having to get up go into lounge/find sky remote/flick through channels etc

I think Sky have said they are looking into supporting Chromecast with Neon but personally I can't see them encouraging people to buy a small streaming device that has the potential to replace their own set top box.

yep, that was my point with the last paragraph.

but until you have chromecast support, having iphone is pretty pointless.

About as big as no android app. That said, Chromecast is the best next option for them as it will give punters a $60 route into any HDMI-enabled TV - thus rectifying something that has been seriously lacking since launch. Off suicide watch, moved to life support, or still too early to call?

But without an iphone or android app, there is no way to cast it using those devices, as a chromecast needs another device as well. The only device I am aware of that has a lightbox app is the ipad or a samsung tablet.  I believe you maybe able to cast ligthbox already from a PC to chromecast, if you cast the whole desktop, but that is laggy.

A chromecast can be controlled with a web browser too. Provided Lightbox or Neon has chromecast support then once the movie/show is up and running it streams direct from the router to the chromecast, which is snappy. It is only if chromecast is not supported on the website that a user would need to go the route of mirroring a tab or desktop, which depending on the router can be a slow, laggy experience.

So does this mean that LightBox will officially support all native webkit HTML5 Browsers?

Frankly it's been a pain having to fire up my PC when I have a perfectly good WDTV-Live media player already attached to the TV. I'm assuming they are selectively supporting it already, as I can't see a Tizen based Samsung Smart TV, or PS3 using Silverlight on the embedded Webkit browser.

I still don't understand why they chose to use Silverlight on PC and Mac either. Chrome is dropping Silverlight support as of next month anyway.

I've been asked per private message to comment on this thread:

We'll support Chromecast via iOS and Android. The supported range of Android will be announced soonish - naturally all currently supported devices will be included.

Having a Google Cast Player app does not unlock an HTML5 player for any browsers. Switching out Silverlight isn't just the player framework, you need to switch streaming formats and encryption as well, which isn't trivial. It's only in the past 12-18 months that DASH streaming has really matured.

Lightbox - we are online TV.

"Lightbox chief executive Kym Niblock said Lightbox would support Google's popular Chromecast streaming media player within weeks, giving subscribers a cable-free way to get Lightbox on to any modern television."

So it's been four weeks. Are we any closer?

Yeah, we're a lot closer. Announcements soonish.

"Couple of weeks" was a bit of a understatement (whether it was a miscommunication on our part or the journalist being creative, I dunno).

I'm already on unlimited, and signed up for the 12 month free deal - I just want to be able to start using it before too much more of my 12 months is up!
