KiwiNZ: I am thinking its time soon to drop sky. Could have Netfix and Lightbox for way less

I don't think people will have both, they will likely have either or. Unfortunately it looks like netflix has a lot more content including movies, based on the Australian Leaks, although NZ may get a cut down service.

I feel both will be common, as the price is low, they are complementary, one is Movie based with TV, the other is TV with more recent TV. LB is adding Coliseum so thats some sport.

I'll probably go both.

Lightbox seems to have some newer TV content then netflix, netflix more diverse with movies and a lot of older content I haven't seen yet.

I'm only in season 1 e19 on arrow, just don't have time to watch everything when it comes out, be nice watching stuff without pressure of if don't watch it now, going to run out of drive space for next recording.

See what things are like when free subscription on Lightbox runs out.

I'll keep mysky for now as figure sky must be coming under some sort competitive pessure, if they don't change will start losing customers.

thats now how I would describe netflix.  netflix IMO is equally tv and movies, probably in favour of TV tbh.  They produce a lot of shows themselves, just announced their first movie (crouching tiger 2), their TV content, though a season behind, is very popular shows and has most current series available, where their movies are a few new ones and a lot of old ones.

so unless lightbox become more of a hulu type service where they have 12 hours behind the US or something for a lot of shows, I don't think lightbox will be around in 3 years time.  Sadly it will probably be neon and netflix.  neon if they add sports streaming, and current content like the latest game of thrones etc.

I disagree, and not because I work for Spark. The content is pretty good, and growing. As we get more and more competing services, none of them will have everything that you want in the one service. If the pricing supports it, we can indulge in multiple services cost effectively. Netflix and Hulu is a good example. One is bigger, the other is newer (content), so while not that complementary, they actually are, if having both is low cost.

Not sure about that. I think Quickflix will be the first casualty - crappy offering and it's already on financial life support. Neon is just plain bad - overpriced, awful flash-based interface and low content. Unless Sky is prepared to cut the price and boost the content, or keep supporting indefinite financial bleeding for regulatory/positioning purposes, I can't see it lasting either. That leaves Lightbox and Netflix as the two main players (assuming Lightbox continues to invest to overcome its current lamentable device support).

The overlap between Lightbox and Netflix isn't huge and their pricing is quite low (compared to, say, a Sky subscription). It's fairly reasonable to assume that a good proportion of people who transition from Sky will subscribe to both to get a good lineup (it's still a huge saving compared to Sky). So, unless Spark or Netflix stumble badly, I can see both those services surviving.

The wildcard is Sky coming back, investing heavily, and actually turning Neon into a good service. I'm guessing that if they did this then a Netflix/Neon duopoly would then be the long-term outcome. However, I suspect Sky is too terrified of cannibalising its current pay TV goldmine to really push the boat out on Neon at this point.

oh I'm not saying neon is good in its current state, its pretty terrible.  but sky has the subscribers.  they have the content rights.  they can offer neon to existing customers for a very small fee (they make heaps off satellite as is, so they can afford to make little off streaming for a few years).

was going by the article on nzhearld where netflix manager said likely 2 services will prevail (or 2 decent ones, maybe a couple of small ones).  im rooting for lightbox, and hope they do go down the hulu route, I will subscribe to them if they do.  Ill never subscribe to neon.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I hope Lightbox can prevail too. They are a NZ company, so have the whole GST thing against them. But they were relatively early into the NZ market, and they have taken risks to get to this point. They also have the existing Spark customer database to market to , which they have offered free 12 month subscriptions to broadband customers, which is going to be a short term loss.

Unless they support my andriod devices and not just a handful of Samsung ones, it's completely irrelevant.

I think whoever snaps up Quickflix maybe the survivor. Quickflix is on most platforms now, including xbox, sony tvs, android, apple etc, so is most like Netflix in terms of it's device coverage. But Quickflix doesn't have the content.

Lightbox adding Chromecast support coupled with a price drop will see me re subscribing, along with keeping Netflix. Now, if only they'd do a welcome back offer for Geekzoners... ;-)

networkn: I foresee a drop in sky subscription charges within 12 months.

I'm picking 3. They will watch the churn from 31 March. The question is will they drop the costs, or will they add content, such as free Soho, etc? Will they offer PPV for some sports? They may drop prices a little then add a lot of freebies such as Movies. Interesting times. My bill is 99.74, post CWC it will be zero. All I have is Basic, Sports, HD Ticket and the MySky

Sadly as long as Rugby is played first on Sky, I'll have Sky. If it wasn't for that, it would be gone. I am actually tempted to drop it for 3 months now, so that I can get back to getting it on promotional pricing in time for the RWC.

If not, it will definitely be gone after the RWC.

I also use it for food tv which I love love love, however I just don't have the time to watch much any more

n4: In my view, Neon is just a 'me-too' product to keep regulators happy, not intended to be competitive.

By simply allowing access to all Sky content instead of cherry picking the seasons available, they'd have my interest. But I guess they don't want to cannibalise their hideously overpriced mainstay.

I disagree. We have Netflix, Hulu & Lightbox. And we were paying customers of the latter before Spark generously offered it to all customers for free.

UK ITV will be broadcasting RWC so a Unotelly sub should be all you need...
