So these calls *are* really from Sky?

I've had quite few, and they start out saying they're calling on behalf of Sky, and do I have a Sky account?

My standard response is that Sky knows if I have a Sky account or not, so why are you asking me? After a bit of toing and froing during which I won't say whether I have Sky or not, they give up.

After all, I have no idea who is really calling, or why.

@sbowness Because I took over the call so early I don't know if he would have eventually told me about the 12 month contract and the $15/month for 6 months.

@franky This was from Sky or a Company that access to my Sky account, as he knew what channels I had.

mdooher:
BigPipeNZ: ditch the landline.  Go mobile only, and suddenly the cold callers completely dry up.

I went to 2talk and set up "Anonymous call screening" after 5pm

So if someone calls after 5 and their number is withheld, the system askes them to state their name and then it rings me and asks if I want to connect with "-----". Telemarketers never bother to leave their name so it drops the call automatically and I don't get interrupted.

I would happily pay Spark for a service like that. Within reasonable $$ of course :-)

I was getting quite a few of those "free upgrade" calls from Sky or their telemarketers.

I told the last one I didn't want any more, and that if I received another one I would immediately cancel my account. He replied that he was putting a note to that effect on my account and (so far) I haven't had another one.

I used to usually be able to tell if it was a telemarketer. Usually if they asked for my name and initials it's an unsolicited call (made by someone working their way through the phone directory, which doesn't give my first name or indicate gender). If they knew my first name then they have got it from somewhere else, or have an established relationship with me.

However, lately I have been getting a few (including one from the IHC tonight), asking for me by name. So someone I have done business with is selling their customer list.....

I never take these calls. "sorry, I don't take unsolicited calls" (click).
