how about you guys @tdgeek @networkn read my initial comment and especially 3 first points on the first line. Maybe it will shed some light.

and wasn't there sky price increase earlier in the year?

I read it. They have contracts for the rights they already obtained, do you really expect them to be able to renegotiate? If they bid less for rights then they run the risk they get outbid by someone else. Everything they lose, makes their offering less attractive. Restructuring will make some but little difference.

I am done with this line of this thread, these discussions always end up in the same place.

It's simple, if it presents value, get/keep Sky, if not, move on. :)

All of those points should be standard practice for any business. You make it sound like they just bought these rights as a new service where will the money come from. Im sure they increased their prices, as did many wage earners, newspaper companies, telcos, its called inflation, and these days with low inflation its often measured in cents .

Agree, buy it if its value for you, or not

from the Annual Report, August 2019, the average remuneration expense across the 1,137 employees of Sky is $81,350. Exclusive of KiwiSaver and incentives.

Streamline the commentators.
I watch for the sport not Justin Marshall going on about crusaders.

When ever I get the choice I listen to the alternative non nz commentary.

NZ commentators talk too much and have sycophantic tendencies.

Bit annoyed they seem to have removed the non nz commentary recently.

Any idea how much rugby nz paid for the 5% as theres been a bit a drop in share price recently...

Having watched every match of RWC 2019 so far, I'd take our usuals over almost all of the other every day of the week twice on Sundays. Scotty Stevenson varies between tolerable, to intolerable, some of the others don't even meet that standard.

Try having a listen to any of the Australian commentators, you'll be sending flowers of apology to JM :)

JM has been a bit over the top but recently it's become less apparent in my opinion.

I really miss Tony Johnson and Grant Nisbett at this RWC.

Yep. Sky just issues shares = printing money. So the value of each share "should" decrease as they are now diluted. But the news has in fact increased the share price by 19.1% as at now. So they paid a record figure, plus the 5%? Or including?

In any case its significant. If Spark had got this, it would be Sky is finished. Not only did that not happen but they are more secure

Yer dreamin, this investment is to keep the tired old business model alive as long as possible - make a very small number of Kiwis pay through the nose to keep the best NZ players under the thumb of the NZRU. The NZRU is like a dying star, it's moving into the red giant phase and will consume everything in sight if it can delay the inevitable dwindling to a white dwarf for a little while longer.

A time-poor geek is hardly a geek at all

I stopped listening to JM the minute I noticed I could select an alternative commentry even if its just the referee.

Yes I pick the ozzies and south africans over JM. Just be quiet and let the pictures tell the story. Sometimes our players are dirty but wont hear our commentators saying so. They often a bit sycophantic too.

How can a player who was at the highest level for so long have such a poor understanding of the rules of rugby. He rant and rave about some decision the come monday an NZ referee will explain how the decision was correct all along.

On reflection as I never watch the talking heads before the game and fast forward through the talking heads at half time and turn off the tv once the game is over maybe commentators just arent my thing in rugby...

I would hope our comcom have a look at the deal. Our largest sporting attraction with an investment in its delivery partner surely stinks of anti-competitive behaviour?

I'm a bit uncomfortable with this arrangement. It does indeed look like it locks NZ Rugby to SkyTV. Though not 100% necessarily...certainly very likely. Ive no idea of the rules/laws around the tendering for rights. I would imagine that there must be some form of "Chinese Wall" to ensure that SkyTV do not receive favouritism and sensitive commercial favouritism. For example; could you imagine if in 5yrs time NZ Rugby hit up Sky with "Pssst.... hey... Spark just bid $XXXm for the rights" cause that wouldn't be on.

I get why both parties would enter into such an agreement - it certainly helps both at the moment. It just concerns me that this locks out future alternatives which is a shame because competition drives improvements.
