Obviously that's your opinion. Personally, my opinion about this announcement is that finally a portion of my tax money is now going towards more freedom of choice. Previous to this announcement I was paying tax to fund TVNZ's restrictive commercial arrangements which restricted my choices about viewing platforms. I am pleased that now a greater proportion of my tax payments is going towards my choice of platform.
Also, now that TVNZ is going to increase it's potential viewership as a direct result of this decision, revenue might improve. As a taxpayer and 'shareholder' this makes much more sense than TVNZ's previously restricitive policies.

Before you say that Prime should reciprocate and be on Freeview consider that Prime is not funded by your taxes and therefore it is an entirely separate issue.

That is my opinion and TVNZ 6 & & on Freeview is tax payer money going to help Sky's bottom line. While Prime is not tax payer funded Freeview or whoever set this up should have demanded that prime goes to Freeview or no TVNZ 6 & 7 on Sky. I think this just moved the analog shut off from around 2012 to about 2025..

Can't be bothered trying to find it, but around six months ago I said here this was going to eventuate and was bagged for it, and some said it won't happen. Still won't affect us, we don't watch it - FTA in HD or not is still not worth viewing. Gotta feel for the people who were conned into buying a Freeview setup if they have / get MySky HDi though.

Apart from the fact that of course Prime TV receives funding from NZ on Air. So they are funded in part by your taxes.

Agreed. This is just TVNZ selling it's products to SKY which falls in timely with the government demanding a dividend from TVNZ.

Where's the Prime on Freeview? Prime is FTA but only on analogue. Could the government please step up to the plate here?

The best thing the govt could do would be to kick-start the analogue turn-off. This would meant that Prime would have to either switch to Freeview or give up its govt funding.

I was agreeing with you. Why would anyone buy a freeview box when they have MySky HDi? They'd just be getting TVNZ6/7.

Isn't some of TV1 and 2 in HD on Freeview as well?

True - but you could count the number of programmes on the fingers of one hand.

Isn't it more fair that taxpayers money goes to all parties instead of TVNZ? It's about being fair to the taxpayer and giving people the freedom to choose the platform to view channels that they fund.

What about poor Joe Bloggs who lives in rural town that doesn't get great analogue TV reception (no Prime TV). He's chosen a Freeview satellite platform, but he can't view the prime tv programmes that his taxes have funded.

That is my gripe with Prime not being on Freeview.

Back to the real story. TVNZ deal with Sky. More than likely a good thing and TVNZ should be making money from this. As for Prime via Freeview the longer they wait the worse Sky look in my book. I have Freeview only and do not miss Prime cause I don't know what is on it. The only show on Prime that I would watch I have normally already watched well before Prime think about broadcasting it. I am not missing anything.

The only other thing that concerns me is the National minister in charge of the review of broadcasting. He seems intent on dropping it. I see the analogue/digital switch being delayed because of this. Therefore Freeview's growth capability will be siginicantly reduced. I would also like NZ to have more antisiphoning laws where by TVNZ or TV3 broadcast Live events of national importance and not a Sky owned channel. But National won't want to hurt a tax paying company and will probably sell TVNZ off so they drop the funding of them and get tax from them as well.

You caught me out - I'm actually an alien. Must admit I hadn't realised there were that many, but then again looking at that list, it's not surprising as I don't watch any of them.

Your list shows how TV3 have been so much quicker off the mark with HD adaptation.

Is anybody game to make a prediction on whether or not TVNZ will use the ICT flag on their HD channels?

Currently I have the original MySky hooked up to a 1920x1200 LCD via Component Video. If I could get HD via my Component Video cables rather than needing to rework all the underfloor cabling to HDMI, then I would consider upgrading to MySky HDi.

How widespread is the use of the ICT flag in other jurisdictions?

I'd expect to see it being used in much the same was as on freeview|HD.
