You know how to work a chain saw and sounds like you have access to one?
If it's a tree stopping your satellite signal then you'll need to find a new position for your dish that has clear signal from D1, it is possible that the tree is shielding the signal enough to cause problems but it would need to be a very big tree.
A better option would be to call your local freeview satellite installer and get him/her to do some testing for you then get the sky guy to simply drop off the RX.
A lot of Sky technicians just reject jobs if they look too hard.
Most of Sky's technicians are contractors and get paid a commission per job. A small number of technicians actually work for Sky directly and get paid a salary. Usually a full install will take around 2 hours but sometimes it can take longer and use more the the contractors materials (eg, cable). In either case, the contractor gets paid the same so it may be that he just can't be bothered doing your install.
It sounds dodgy that he's just walking about saying there is no signal...
You could try asking for a different technician.....
Long ago when i had Sky installed the first technician said it couldn't be done because of a massive tree we had. When my dad started working for them, he just ran a massive cable across to the other end of the roof and got it working just perfectly.
I'll post a picture of the tree so everyone can see what i am dealing with - i am looking into whether or not a private install would be the go , if i do do i have to pay for the sattelite ? Just want someone to say right ... put a 3m post here ( in the most discreet place possible) and run the cable to here and when i come back i can install it - job done ! Not well you could try here, or i can fix it to this tree stump - and you should get it ! haha Pillock !
If you do a private install, do it yourself, otherwise you not only pay for the dish, you pay for the guy to put it up, align it and attach the cable. Alignment alone (here in Whangarei) was going to cost me $60
I went with a pole some distance from the house. I did this for two reasons.
1. Having a dish on the house looks terrible.
2. The pole is installed where I get the best reception on the property. (in Queenstown with trees in the foreground and a hill in the background).
I just dug a hoe, got a bit of scaff pipe and concreted it in. I bought a 90cm dish myself online and then had a local contractor run 4 cables between the house and the dish. It was pretty easy and keeps the house looking nice and clean.

How come you got a contractor to dig your cables in? they wouln't be electrical so you wouldn't need a permit or someone to sign off on it.

Why did you have him run 4 cables from the dish to your house?
