"What Sky box and voip connection do you have, the issue is the different types of modems used in different devices and the reliability of connections, basically low speed modem services do not work well over high speed IP network"

setup which works for me is; MyskyHdi + voip

I also got myskyhdi and 2talk voip using linksys spa but it didnt work. Is there any config on ata that I need to setup?

2talk, Linksys WRP400 and Hdi don't work for me. I mucked around for a while and eventually gave up. I did have it working with a WRTP54g and VFX though.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

currenlty got 400@-19,425@-19;10(*/0/1+2) as dial tone, possibly dial tone issue? or audio config that may trigger to dial the modem? anyone here succesfully fix this with linksys spa?

The issue is nothing to do with dialtones. It's all to do with codecs, jitter buffers and echo cancellers that I explained in a post on the last page.

From my understanding of both iTalk and 2talk's network configurations and interconnects you will never get a modem working over them.

But try setting the ATA to use uLaw for fax/modem. Tested a modem ok on Linksys PAP2 before that had refused to work on another ATA.

Time to find a new industry!

Changing to a codec generally is not going to deal with modems, networks have many types of configuration options for PSTN handoff to try and deal with Modems, the main issue you see is in the different modems , the tones and the actual modem recievers themselves with the tolerences around the detection alogrithims ... changing the codec is not a techicial solution I'm sorry it's a try and see approach.

Modem detection as a general rule is not a reliable solution over high speed IP networks, any form of latency jitter will effect the tones and detection of them by the modem receiver, some modems and receivers may work but a lot won't.

G711u is based on the US 56k standard per time slot ie T1 as appossed to G711a which is the eurpean and our standard at 64k per time slot ie E1.

Basically my thoughts are that while everyone is rushing ahead with Technology modem based service companys are actually holding everyone back, they have seriously neglected the move to an IP based world and they need to sort their act out pretty quickly.

A simple codec change won't necessarily do anything. If you have echo cancellation, jitter buffer or comfort noise detection enabled then you still won't get a modem or fax working reliably.

The Linksys ATA's detect CNG and CNG tones and bypass all options such as these and force the codec to alaw or ulaw. There are numerous settings in Linksys ATA's to configure these but as Phil pointed out the key area is the interconnect with the PSTN. You can have everything right at your end but if you have a VoIP provider who doesn't have thing set up correctly you're not going to get anywhere.
