cws82us: Hey thee u just checked the new sky witch and theres 2 new channels coming very soon
called nick jr and rt channel.

With the closure of MTV New Zealand Sky negotiated the introduction of Nick Jr.
And, from other discussions, RT is probably Russian Television which is an unencrypted channel on the satellite.

That will be the 2nd time MTV has made an appearance in NZ and then dissapeared/failed, I remember watching MTV back in the early 90's free to air on UHF.  Why dont sky introduct a channel like V hits on foxtel in aus, I must admit when I was over there visiting family, I watched that channel more than any other music channel, V2 is also good plus foxtel has got so many more channels and Discovery HD which I want to see here.

Gareth is right Channel V would be a good addition to Sky's lineup with MTV bowing out. Channel V was good back in the day and can't see why it wouldn't do well over here. I believe that when it was in NZ they used to have a lot of NZ music and competitions available for New Zealanders.

Personally though on the whole music tv thing I would really like to see (omg i'm getting old) less raunchy video clips that are more suitable for teens and tweenagers to watch. Sex sells is a great thing for us adults but i don't really like the idea of my 13yr old daughter watching a lot of the music videos that are on air these days.

Take for example a couple of the clips on the Epic Youtube Videos thread like Hollerados Americanarama or the Iphone Song (one where all the music is done using Iphones and relevant apps. Those are both really great video clips without the need to use sex to get people to like and watch or buy the music.

Of course back on track Nick Junior is a great channel for Sky to add in fact I would be willing to put money on it being one of the most watched channels not only that it would certainly be tops for it's target demographic hehe.

MTV in the 1990's was a MTV Europe feed that TVNZ bought rights to and broadcast using the Horizon Pacific spectrum I think.  It was primarily used to combat MaxTV broadcast in Auckland.  In the end MaxTV was sold by its founders and TVNZ decided MTV Europe wasnt working anymore.

The latest incarnation of MTV was by MTV Networks and part of the global expansion including Australia.  Part of its programming included MTV general entertainment rather than music video only.

From memory Channel V is part of the suite of channels offered by XYZ networks (50/50 owned by Austar and Foxtel).  Sky would have to determine whether Channel V offered anything different to Juice and J2 as music video based networks.  Would another distributed channel offer more than what is already being broadcast?  MTV had the added benefit of the general entertainment which would broaden Sky's offering beyond just music video.

I understand your desire for Channel V but in reality thats like saying you prefer a radio format (and DJ's) offered in Wellington and why cant someone bring it to Auckland.  If the format was better than something already there then a broadcaster would look to do so.

As to the extra channels and Discovery HD (among the other HD channels on offer the world over) - this forum is littered with discussions and debates about exactly that topic.

I think it was specifically MTV UK. It wasn't a profitable venture.

I'm surprised they were willing to add RT to their lineup.
