bazzer: Wow!  50%?  Pretty rough considering most people I know never buy PPV.

We never used to, but now they are in HD as well we have purchased a few.

...one other thing to bear in mind.  (In terms of space utilization)

The partition of the HDD in the MySky is reserved for "OnDemand" pay-per-view only.  ie. It does not provide the traditional Pay-Per-View functionality that are provided by their Sky Box Office channels and their Adult PPV channels...  These PPV functions still work without the MySky storage - the only "Value Add" that is provided to the customer in exchange for the loss of half the usable capacity on their PVR is the ability to commence watching a selected PPV event 'immediately', rather than waiting for for the next 'looped' broadcast to commence.
(of course, the significant "value add" to Sky, is that they can re-utilise their Satelite bandwidth for other things - rather than having to have 4 (or so) channel streams for each PPV movie that they're screening, each running staggered loops at 20-30min intervals, they can achieve HD PPV by broadcasting movies once only -> thus providing many more HD PPV items across a single channel stream.)

We can only hope that once the whole "OnDemand" focus shifts to delivery via IP, Sky will drop PPV via the Set Top Box, and we can enjoy the increased storage yield in the MySky and the reduced compression on their transmissions...

There was is a rumour of a 500GB model posted. Well, I've seen one and can confirm it is an official test model. I've also heard they are apparently working on one double that, but can't confirm nor find out any more. Take it as hope of things to come.

considering you can get a 1TB drive for around $100 retail these days, don't see why they shouldn't be using at least that.

Especially with buffering PPV you are constantly writing the the drive. Long life drives are typically lower capacity and more expensive than consumer drives. That said, I do not know what drive they use.

500 GB will *never* be enough.  If this is as good as they can do then they can forget it.

1 TB is the absolute minimum.  But then if they want to charge us $1,000 for an upgrade that's worth barely $200, they can forget it as far as I'm concerned.

If they are going to provide an upgarde make it a worthwhile size at a realistic price.  Then they will have a winner.

I've been waiting anxiously for a bigger MySky HDI hard-drive.

As it isn't really watch what you want when you want anymore, as you have to watch it all before you record next weeks programmes.  I sometimes find it hard to keep up and make sure there is enough space.

I would hate to have to go away on holiday, I wouldn't be able to record for more than 1 week...maybe two...

Come on Sky, get it together and give us bigger hard-drives for a decent upgrade price.  I'd pay $20 a month (instead of the $15 for a 1TB + box)

Ran outta space on our MySky HDi the other day so had to furiously delete some stuff.

Come on Sky - we want something bigger. I can easily live with no PPV space on the HD - get rid of it! Please!

Why should we pay extra, don't encourage them to leech yet more of our cash for an average at best service.

MySky HD (occasionally on a few channels but more if you pay us another $10) i

Well nothing is for free in this world, I can't see them giving us an upgrade for nothing.  If they were getting nothing from us, there would be no reason for them to give us bigger boxes.

I think the only problem is that they employ only marketing type people.  No one who really understands technical issues or what their customers really want.  So you want a 1 GB had drive in your MySkyHDi box?  So what's a hard disk again?

Just ask yourself.  These days would you bother buying or renting a hard disk recorder with just 160 MB of usable space?  Duh.  Laughing

Someone once said, "If you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything very innovative".  Maybe it's time for Sky to fail.

The tiny hard drives they currrently use will be getting more expensive soon as buying vintage gear usually starts to get pricey. They should upgrade to 2TB (Do it right none of this I'd be happy with 1GB stuff. 2TB is where they should be aiming). The Marketing team can go nuts with the size of 2TB its enough space to store... Sure set aside 30GB of a 2TB and people not going to care to much but when 1/2 is being used for something that is so infrequently used by alot of people....
